    Influenza Weekly Report

    No laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza; PHL tested 23 specimens this week.

    Influenza activity across the country has increased with localized and sporadic activity in most provinces. 1,130 laboratory-confirmed cases in Canada this week; 96% are influenza A.

    Three cases of RSV have been reported to date in the province; common for this time of the year. It is an ideal time to promote preventative practices for RSV especially for families with babies less than six months old. RSV can cause significant problems for infants.

    HealthLine respiratory calls doubled this week to 62 calls for the province.

    The majority of respiratory calls for the 2012/2013 influenza season are for the age group of 0-14 years (54%), followed by age group 25-44 years (19%).

    Summary

    Five cases of influenza A were reported; all from EH. Age range for these cases is 9 months to 32 years.

    Across Canada localized and sporadic activity reported from most provinces with widespread activity noted in southern Ontario.

    It?s not to late to vaccinate!! Increasing flu activity should be a wake-up call. Promote vaccination and preventative actions.

            Summary

            The number of laboratory-confirmed cases decreased slightly during the past week; however, three RHAs are reporting widespread activity. Twenty-eight hospitalizations reported this week; 18 - EH, 6?WH, 3?CH and 1?LGH. All cases this week are influenza A. Twelve outbreaks were reported; down from 18 for last week.

            The other Atlantic Provinces have localized influenza activity. Widespread activity is still being reported in Central and Western Canada. NML reports virus strains are 98% similar to the vaccine strains.

            It?s not to late to vaccinate!! Promote vaccination and preventative actions especially the 3 ?Cs?: Clean your hands, Cover your cough, and Contain your illness.

              Summary

              Widespread activity is still reported from three RHAs; 37% of the cases to-date occurred in week 3. The number of laboratory-confirmed cases increased significantly in CH and WH this week with a stabilization of cases in EH. Hospitalizations increased from 28 in week 2 to a total of 50 cases in week 3. All cases this week are influenza A. There have been 43 outbreaks of influenza and influenza-like illness reported in the past month; however there have been only two new outbreaks reported for week 3.

              Western and Central Canada are reporting a slight decline in the number of cases. The other Atlantic Provinces have localized influenza activity. The virus strains are 98% similar to the vaccine strains.

                Summary

                Widespread activity is still reported from three RHAs: EH, CH, and WH. The majority of cases were in EH (46%), followed by WH (27%), CH (23%), and LGH (4%).

                There were 165 specimens tested by the laboratory for influenza in week 6, a slight drop from last week.

                All cases were influenza A this week and the majority of cases this season have been influenza A (99%).

                A total of 203 hospitalizations have been reported to-date in NL: 30.4 % of cases.

                The immunization status is known for 83% of the cases: 23% were vaccinated.

                Across the country many regions continue to report widespread and localized activity.

                  Widespread activity is reported from two RHAs: EH and WH: localized activity is reported in CH and LGH.

                  The majority of cases were in EH (45%), followed by WH (27%), CH (24%), and LGH (5%).

                  Influenza A has been the predominant strain in NL (99% of cases): 5 cases of influenza B reported todate.

                  A total of 220 hospitalizations have been reported to-date in NL: 34 % of influenza cases. The majority (65%) of hospitalizations were in the age group 65+. Of the hospitalized cases, 12% required ICU care.

                  There have been 8 cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) reported this week: 25 cases this season.

                    Widespread activity was reported by one RHA, CH: localized activity reported in EH and LGH and sporadic activity reported in WH.

                    There have been 669 cases reported this season in NL: influenza A continues to be the predominant strain (99% of cases). The number of cases reported has declined for the past three weeks.

                    A total of 15 deaths have been reported in NL. All deaths were in the age group over 65 years.

                    Across Canada, several indicators of influenza activity have declined.

                    There have been 17 cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) reported this week: 39 cases this season.

                      There were 5 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza reported this week.

                      There have been 695 cases reported this season in NL: influenza A continues to be the main strain (99% of cases) and there have been 9 cases of influenza B reported.

                      In NL, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was the predominant virus reported this week (13 cases). There have been 62 cases reported this season.

                      Across Canada, there is an overall decline in influenza/ILI activity from the peak in early January.
