    Flu numbers spiked in Alberta over the holidays
    Confirmed cases and hospitalizations are both up since mid-December

    Confirmed cases of influenza in Alberta spiked over the holidays.

    Across the province, 1,670 confirmed cases were recorded between Dec. 14 and Jan. 4, bringing the seasonal total to 2,998.

    Hospitalizations also spiked in the same period, rising from 241 to 461, and three more people died from influenza, bringing the seasonal total to nine — six of them in the Edmonton area.

    In the Calgary zone, which has the highest rate of infection in the province, 1,425 people were confirmed to have either influenza A or B, compared with 668 in the Edmonton zone.

    The north zone of the province also recorded a drastic increase in the number of confirmed cases, rising from 100 on Dec. 14 to 361 on Jan. 4...
