    During Week 10, influenza decreased slightly from the previous week in Alberta with a decrease in the number of confirmed influenza cases and a slight decrease in ILI rates in the community. Influenza activity this season has been lower than seen in previous seasons.

We are observing a later than usual peak in influenza activity this season, compared to previous seasons.

              During Week 16, influenza activity remained elevated in Alberta, but appears to be decreasing. There was a decrease in the number of confirmed cases, an increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community, a decrease in the number of new hospitalized cases, and an increase in the number of confirmed influenza outbreaks. The peak in influenza activity was later in the season than usual, and although decreasing, we can expect to continue to see some influenza activity over the next few weeks.

                Summary: Week 20, May 13?19, 2012

                During Week 20, influenza activity increased slightly. There was an increase in the number of confirmed cases, an increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community, and an influenza B outbreak. However, there was a decrease in the number of new hospitalized cases, and a decrease in the number of visits to medical offices for influenza. Influenza activity appeared to peak several weeks later in the season than usual this year and recently has been decreasing to seasonal levels for the summer.

There were sporadic cases confirmed in Calgary Zone and Edmonton Zone, and one confirmed influenza A (H3) outbreak in Calgary Zone.
