    Hamilton confirms 1st case of monkeypox

    Hamilton Public Health Services says it has confirmed the city's first case of the monkeypox virus.

    The Hamilton resident "was most likely infected during a recent visit to the City of Toronto," the Hamilton health unit said in a media release Monday afternoon.

    "The individual is currently isolating and Hamilton Public Health Services has notified all close contacts."

    Public health told CBC Hamilton the case was confirmed over the long weekend.

    ... This comes as the country has seen at least 100 cases, including 77 confirmed cases in Ontario.

    Hamilton Public Health Services says it has confirmed the Ontario city's first case of the monkeypox virus.

      The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is working with provincial and territorial public health partners to investigate cases of monkeypox in Canada. As the investigation evolves, it is anticipated that additional cases will be reported in Canada. Provinces and territories have publicly reported 300 cases of monkeypox as of July 4, 2022 at 1:00 pm EDT.

        Alberta reported three more confirmed cases of monkeypox Monday evening, raising the provincial total to eight adult cases.

        Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, announced the monkeypox cases on Twitter, saying all the cases are in the Edmonton and Calgary health zones and that the overall risk for Albertans remains low.

          Vaccination against monkeypox available in Nunavik

          Vaccination against the monkeypox virus is now available in Nunavik.

          The vaccines, which help mitigate infection and spread of monkeypox, are being offered to eligible recipients in all communities there, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services announced Monday.

          ... People in Nunavik can receive the vaccine by contacting their local community service centre or nursing station and asking for a public health or COVID-19 nurse.

          The vaccine for monkeypox is the same as is used to prevent smallpox. According to the Nunavik board, it can be administered before exposure to help prevent infection, or after exposure to an infected person to help weaken symptoms. The vaccine is 85 per cent effective at preventing infection.

              Number of confirmed Monkeypox cases in Ontario rises to 101

              The number of lab-confirmed cases of Monkeypox in Ontario tripled in the past two weeks, likely reflecting a greater emphasis on surveillance and testing as global infection figures rise.

              Public Health Ontario says there are now 101 confirmed cases of Monkeypox in the province, up from 33 on June 22, with 85 of them in Toronto and all of them in men.

              The remaining confirmed cases are in Ottawa (4), Halton (2), Middlesex-London (2) and eight other public health units including Hamilton, Durham and Simcoe-Muskoka with one case each.

              There are eight other probable cases in the province that remain under investigation...

                      First case of monkeypox detected on southern Vancouver Island

                      In a media release Friday evening, Island Health confirmed the first case of monkeypox on Vancouver Island.

                      The affected individual resides on southern Vancouver Island. A specific location was not revealed.

                      Lab results confirmed the positive case on Thursday, but a notice from Island Health was sent out to the public on Friday.

                      Island Health said public health teams are conducting follow-ups on the case, including managing contacts identified through contact tracing...

                        July 11, 2022


                        Introduction

                        This report provides an epidemiologic summary of monkeypox in Ontario and includes the most current
                        information available from Ontario’s integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS) as of July 11,
                        2022.

                        The current provincial case definition for monkeypox can be found in Appendix 1 of the Infectious
                        Disease Protocol for Smallpox and other Orthopoxviruses including Monkeypox.

                        For further information regarding the monkeypox virus, including signs, symptoms, and how to reduce
                        your risk of infection, visit the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Monkeypox Virus webpage and Public Health
                        Ontario’s Monkeypox webpage for additional resources.
                        Highlights

                        ï‚· There are 156 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Ontario.

                        ï‚· 124/156 (79.5%) confirmed cases were reported by Toronto Public Health (see Table 3 for
                        confirmed cases by public health unit).

                        ï‚· 155/156 (99.4%) confirmed cases are male; 1/156 (0.6%) is female.

                         The average age of confirmed cases is 37.3 years (range: 20 – 65 years).

                        ï‚· The most commonly reported symptoms include rash, oral/genital lesions, swollen lymph
                        nodes, headache, fever, chills, myalgia and fatigue.

                        ï‚· 9/156 (5.8%) of confirmed cases have been hospitalized, and 1/156 (0.6%) have been in
                        the intensive care unit (ICU); no deaths have been reported.

                        ï‚· In addition, there are 8 probable cases. All eight (100.0%) probable cases are male and range in
                        age from 27 to 52 years (average: 39.0 years).

                                Public Health Ontario reports 230 monkeypox cases, up from 156 in last update
                                Public Health Ontario is reporting 230 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the province, most of which are located in Toronto. The tally as of Monday has risen from the 156 cases confirmed as of July 11.

                                Public Health Ontario is reporting 230 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the province, most of which are located in Toronto.

                                The tally as of Monday has risen from the 156 cases confirmed as of July 11.

                                The provincial agency's latest report says the cases are largely in southern Ontario, with 172 cases in Toronto, as well as one each in Sudbury and North Bay.

                                One of the confirmed cases is in a female and the rest of the people affected are male with an average age of 37.

                                Public health says most cases are among men who report intimate contact with men but say anyone can get monkeypox.

                                The report says nine people have been hospitalized with the illness and one person has been in intensive care.

                                There are also eight probable monkeypox cases in Ontario, all in men between the ages of 31 and 69....
