Avian flu found in bald eagle on P.E.I.
Farmers in the region have been on the alert for avian flu
CBC News · Posted: Mar 02, 2022 9:50 AM AT | Last Updated: 12 minutes ago

A case of avian flu has been confirmed in a bald eagle found on P.E.I.'s North Shore, the province announced Wednesday morning.

The virus is of the subtype H5N1, the government said in a news release. The province describes it as a very serious bird disease that spreads easily and quickly. It can infect both wild and domestic birds...

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A fox kit that was found in Augustine Cove is suspected to be the first mammal in P.E.I. to have contracted avian influenza.

Hundreds of gannets found sick, dead on P.E.I. shores due to avian flu
Cody McEachern · Journalist | Posted: 1 hour ago | Updated: 1 hour ago | 7 Min Read

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Hundreds of sick, dying or dead seabirds are washing up on P.E.I. shores due to an outbreak of avian influenza.

Estimates by the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada indicate over 4,000 northern gannets have been found washed up on beaches in the Gulf of St. Lawrence since the outbreak hit the species in May. More than 300 of those have been collected on P.E.I. shores.

“This is the first time we’ve ever had a serious wildlife outbreak, certainly on the East Coast. It's kind of a constantly evolving situation,” said Laura Bourque, wildlife pathologist with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.

“Initially, we were seeing it in gulls, raptors, crows and Canada geese. Those were the species we were seeing it in as the winter developed. Now that we’re entering into the summer, we are seeing it emerge in several new species. I expect it's going to continue to expand its species horizon.”...

Avian flu virus affecting mammals in P.E.I.
Alison Jenkins · Journalist | Posted: 4 hours ago | Updated: 4 hours ago | 6 Min Read

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Avian flu has been found in skunks in P.E.I. as well as affecting a wide range of bird species and foxes in the province, says the regional director of the Canadian Wildlife Health Co-operative.

“The highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was first detected in P.E.I. just over a year ago, so we’ve been dealing with it on the Island all that time,” said Dr. Megan Jones, who is also an associate professor with the Atlantic Veterinary College.

Jones said even though the disease primarily affects birds, it has also popped up in mammal species.

In June, the Canadian Wildlife Health Co-operative found avian flu in several litters of fox kits from across P.E.I., and this winter the lab found the flu in a handful of skunks...

We report additional wild birds infected with highly pathogenic fully Eurasian H5N5 (2.3.4.4b) avian influenza viruses in Prince Edward Island. This Event is the continuation of Event #4754, where we had reported previous occurrences of H5N5 in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Outbreaks are reported by province/territory. The geographical marker is on the capital. For detailed and current information on high pathogenicity avian influenza cases in wildlife, please consult : http://www.cwhc-rcsf.ca/avian_influenza.php Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada. According to Article 10.4.1.4. of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Member Country should not impose bans on the international trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of infection with any Influenza A viruses in birds other than poultry.
