Epidemiological comments
Testing at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease (NCFAD) on samples from outbreak ONT-2015-NAI-001 has confirmed HPAI H5N2 virus with an IVPI of 2.97. Testing has also confirmed a H5N2 avian influenza virus with the same pathogenicity based on preliminary molecular sequencing on one additional farm (ONT-2015-NAI-002) with clinical signs. On 12 April 2015, the CFIA announced the establishment of an Avian Influenza Control Zone in Ontario to control the movement of animals, products and equipment in the area to minimize disease spread. The boundary of the Avian Influenza Control Zone covers a 10km radius from the ONT-2015-NAI-001 premises confirmed to be infected with avian influenza, located in Oxford County, Ontario. All premises located within the Avian Influenza Control Zone have been placed under quarantine. The CFIA is monitoring these premises closely for any signs of disease. Infected premises ONT-2015-NAI-002 is also located in Oxford County. The farm is quarantined, disease control actions are in progress and a zone is being established. Humane depopulation of all susceptible animals on infected premises ONT-2015-NAI-001 was completed on 10 April 2015. The process for cleaning and disinfecting all barns has started. All activities on farm are under the direct supervision of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
