    Avian influenza resurfaces in Alberta poultry
    This is the first commercial poultry flock in the province to be infected since December 2023.

    Canadian officials reported the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry flock in Alberta for 2024.

    According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the presence of the virus was confirmed in a commercial flock in Parkland County, Alberta, on February 19. CFIA did not disclose information concerning the type of flock or how many birds were involved.​

    ​The province’s second H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak of 2024 was declared this week at a commercial poultry operation in Mountain View County.

    The Canadian Food and Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported that the outbreak was detected Monday, Feb. 19 southeast of Olds.

    On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the CFIA’s executive vice-president declared that a primary control zone (PCZ) be enacted around the poultry farm.​..
