An elementary school student in Edmonton has been diagnosed with diphtheria, a serious and contagious illness that is rarely found in Canada.
Several people who came into contact with the student at Evansdale School and at the child?s home have been told to stay away from the public and are being monitored for possible signs of infection.

A student who contracted diphtheria is the first person in the Edmonton area in a decade to be diagnosed with the illness.
Eleven people who came into contact with the student at Evansdale School and at home are now in isolation and being monitored for symptoms by public health officials, Dr. Chris Sikora, an Edmonton zone medical health officer with Alberta Health Services, said Tuesday.
Edmonton Public Schools spokeswoman Carrie Rosa said Tuesday the student, diagnosed with cutaneous diphtheria (a skin infection) last week, attends Evansdale, which is in north-central Edmonton and has a large population of newcomers to Canada.
