How many cases are there of Zika virus in Canada?

As of February 25, 2016, 14 travel-related cases of Zika virus have been reported in Canada.
The case counts will be updated on Mondays and Thursdays. The next update will be made on Monday, February 29, 2016.
Currently, neither of the mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus is found in Canada due to the climate. So, there is a very low probability of transmission in Canada. To date, there have been no reported cases of locally acquired Zika virus in Canada.
Current evidence suggests that Zika virus is likely to persist and spread in the Americas and the South Pacific. There is ongoing risk to Canadians travelling to endemic regions.

20 Canadians identified with Zika, including pregnant woman

      By Kyle Duggan | Mar 7, 2016 5:47 pm |

Twenty Canadians have tested positive for the Zika virus, including one pregnant woman, according to Canada?s chief public health officer.

Dr. Gregory Taylor told a House of Commons health committee Monday there is one case identified of a pregnant Canadian with Zika, but would not say where she is in order to protect her privacy.

?Often times we don?t know whether the sample is coming from a pregnant woman or not. We?re aware of one in Canada at this time,? he told the committee. ?There may be more but we?re not aware of that.?

?We expect that the numbers will increase,? Taylor said, due to out of country travel. ?We expect we?ll see a lot more people who test positive for [Zika], hopefully not pregnant women.?
      ...
Taylor told the committee that the research is evolving rapidly so the Public Health Agency of Canada?s recommendations may change as new research comes in.

How many cases are there of Zika virus around the world?

The virus was first identified in humans in the 1950s. From 1951 through 1981, evidence of human Zika virus infection was reported from African countries and in parts of Asia.
In 2007, the first major outbreak of Zika virus occurred in Micronesia (Yap island) in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. This was the first time that Zika virus was detected outside of Africa and Asia.
Between 2013 and 2015, several significant outbreaks were noted on islands and archipelagos from the Pacific region. This included a large outbreak in French Polynesia.
In early 2015, Zika virus emerged in South America with widespread outbreaks reported in Brazil and Colombia.
