Nova Scotia reports nine COVID-19 deaths, spike in new cases
John McPhee | Posted: 2 hours ago | Updated: 1 hour ago | 4 Min

Nova Scotia is reporting nine new COVID-19 deaths for the week ending July 4 and a spike in new cases.

The new numbers are posted on the province's COVID-19 dashboard. The government said last week that beginning in July, instead of its issuing weekly COVID-19 reports, it was shifting to monthly updates. The dashboard will still be updated weekly...

All four provinces across Atlantic Canada are reporting an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations as experts warn a seventh wave of the pandemic is rolling across the region.

On Thursday, Nova Scotia reported 44 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 symptoms from July 12 to 18. That is double the number hospitalized just two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, P.E.I reported its highest number of hospitalizations since the pandemic began. A record 41 people are in hospital with COVID-19, including one in ICU.

In New Brunswick, the number of COVID-19 hospital admissions has doubled in the past week. Thirty people were newly admitted to hospital because of the virus between July 10 and July 16, up from 15 the previous week.

Newfoundland and Labrador has also seen a surge in hospital admissions, according to the latest figures released Wednesday. The province's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald has said she expects an increase in hospitalizations as the Omicron subvariant BA.5 circulates around the globe.

N.S. hospitals no longer have designated COVID-19 units
Health authority removed designated units last month, moving to ‘care in place’ model
Brooklyn Currie · CBC News · Posted: Aug 10, 2022 3:56 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Nova Scotians who are admitted to the hospital while sick with COVID-19 are no longer being treated separately from patients who have not contracted the virus.

The province has been moving away from designated COVID-19 units for some time. The last ones closed in mid-July.

It's now using a "care in place" model, meaning all patients will be treated in whichever unit or facility of the hospital that meets their needs, regardless of COVID-19 status.

Dr. Shelly McNeil, senior medical director for COVID planning and implementation for Nova Scotia Health, called it the "gradual evolution" of dealing with COVID-19 in the health care system.

"We're seeing a shift to patients that tend to be complex medically, so they have lots of underlying medical problems, and COVID is tipping them over the edge, so to speak, with regard to other medical problems," McNeil said...

Nova Scotia reported an increase in positive results for PCR tests and an increase in hospitalizations — but fewer deaths — in July compared to June in its monthly COVID-19 epidemiological summary.

A total of 8,650 positive PCR results, 225 hospitalizations and nine deaths were observed in July 2022. In June, the province reported 7,570 PCR positive results, 144 hospitalizations and 15 deaths from COVID-19.

The province said of the nine deaths reported in July, six were people who were 70 or older and three were living in long-term care facilities.

Age and a lack of vaccinations are still associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, the province noted in its report.

It said Nova Scotians 70 and older have been hospitalized at nearly 14 times the rate of those 18 to 49. Also for this age group, the rate of death is 166 times higher compared to those under 50...
