New Brunswick's COVID-19 numbers continue downward trend
4 deaths in last week, and ICU patients and hospitalizations down from previous week
Mia Urquhart · CBC News · Posted: Aug 09, 2022 2:51 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 minute ago

Most key measurements for COVID-19 in New Brunswick continued a downward trend again last week, according to the most recent weekly report released by the province.

While the number of deaths reported between July 31 and Aug. 6 was the same as the week before, most other categories were down, including the number of confirmed PCR-confirmed tests, active cases, hospitalizations, and ICU patients.

The most significant drop is in the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 — they dropped by almost half, with 20 reported last week compared to 39 the week before.

According to the report released Tuesday, 742 new cases were reported between July 31 and Aug. 6. That was down from 747 the previous week, and 938 the week before that.

Also down were the seven-day moving averages for hospitalizations and for PCR-confirmed cases.

The report notes that those who are unprotected by vaccine continue to have the highest rate of hospitalization for COVID-19 and ICU admissions...

N.B. reports 4 more COVID-19 deaths, rise in hospital admissions and active hospitalizations
33 people hospitalized for COVID, according to province, Horizon and Vitalité report 99 people in hospital
              Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Aug 30, 2022 12:18 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

COVID-19 has claimed four more New Brunswickers in the past week, and hospital admissions for COVID-19 and active hospitalizations because of the virus have both increased, the province's latest figures show.

The latest deaths include a person in their 60s, a person in their 70s, a person in their 80s and a person 90 or older, according to Tuesday's COVIDWatch report.

Their deaths raise the province's pandemic death toll to 466.

Thirty-one people were admitted to hospital for COVID-19 between Aug. 21 and Aug. 27. That's up from 22 in the previous week's report.

There are 33 people currently hospitalized because of the virus, up from 21, according to the province. Four people require intensive care, up from one.

Meanwhile the regional health authorities, which include in their weekly reports people admitted to hospital because of COVID-19, as well as those initially admitted for another reason and later test positive for the virus, say there are 99 New Brunswickers hospitalized either for or with COVID-19, five of whom require intensive care, a slight decrease from last week...

Deaths, hospitalizations up, COVID cases down in N.B.
Weekly report shows 6 more people have died, including a person in their 50s
Mia Urquhart · CBC News · Posted: Sep 07, 2022 2:03 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Hospital admissions and deaths rose while the number of COVID-19 cases went down last week compared to the previous week, according to the province's latest weekly report.

There were six new deaths — one person in their 50s, four in their 80s and one over 90 — compared to four the previous week. That brings the total number of deaths in New Brunswick to 472 as of Saturday. The vast majority — 81 per cent — are people over the age of 70.

There were 589 new cases last week compared to 712 the week before.

"I think the fact that we're in a stable period is a good thing," said Dr. Jennifer Russell, New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health.

She pointed out that deaths have gone up by two, ICU admissions have gone down by two and hospitalizations up by four. Those categories have all been fairly stable over the summer months.

"One thing we noticed is that our peak never ended up being as high as we thought it was going to be and that's a good thing," said Russell.

The highest proportion of hospitalizations for COVID-19 continues to be among individuals aged 70 to 89. Twenty-five per cent of all admissions are for those in their 70s, even though that age group represents only 10 per cent of New Brunswick's population...

The number of COVID-related deaths, hospitalizations and new cases have all decreased slightly in the past week, according to the province's latest figures.

COVID-19 claimed four more New Brunswickers between Sept. 4 and Sept. 10, down from six the previous week, the COVIDWatch report shows.

The latest deaths include a person in their 50s, one person in their 70s, one person in their 80s, and one 90 or older. Their deaths raise New Brunswick's pandemic death toll to 476.

Twenty-three people were admitted to hospital because of the virus last week, compared to 35 the week before.

New Brunswick is making it easier for people to obtain COVID-19 rapid tests, the Department of Health announced on Wednesday, after the province recorded four more COVID-related deaths in the past week.

People no longer need to have COVID symptoms to qualify for a rapid test kit, and the kits will be available for pickup at more locations, particularly in rural areas, including libraries or municipal offices...

...The announcement comes as the virus claimed the lives of four more people, all 90 or older, the province's COVIDWatch report for Sept. 11 to Sept. 17 shows. Their deaths raise New Brunswick's pandemic death toll to 480.

Hospitalizations decreased to 21 from 35, including two people who require intensive care, down from four, according to Public Health.

The province's two regional health authorities, meanwhile, say there are 96 New Brunswickers hospitalized either for or with COVID-19 as of Saturday, up from 81 a week ago.

Unlike Public Health, which only reports people hospitalized because of COVID-19, Horizon and Vitalité also include in their weekly reports those initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus.

Eight people are in intensive care, down from 12, the Horizon and Vitalité COVID-19 dashboards show.

The number of people newly admitted to hospital for COVID-19 also decreased this week to 21, compared to 23 last week, according to the province.

Among the new admissions is one person in their 50s, two in their 60s, 10 in their 70s, six in their 80s and two 90 or older.

The highest portion of hospitalizations for COVID-19 is among people aged 70 to 89, the COVIDWatch report indicates...

Five more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19, raising the pandemic death toll to 485, the province reported Tuesday.

The latest deaths include one person in their 60s, two in their 70s, one in their 80s, and one 90 or older, according to the COVIDWatch report for Sept. 18 to Sept. 24.

The number of New Brunswickers hospitalized for or with COVID-19 in the past week has remained stable at 95, compared to 96 a week ago, according to the province's two regional health authorities.

But the Vitalité Health Network saw a 48 per cent jump in its number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized, while the Horizon Health Network saw an 18 per cent decrease, their weekly COVD dashboards show.

Vitalité has 37 patients hospitalized as of Saturday, up from 25 the previous week, with three in intensive care, unchanged, according to its dashboard.

5 more people have died from COVID, 19 people are hospitalized because of the virus, 1,053 new cases

The number of COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations and new confirmed cases remained relatively stable in New Brunswick over the past week, about one month after school resumed without any COVID restrictions, figures released Tuesday show.

But the province's acting chief medical officer of health cautions against reading too much into that.

While it's "good" the numbers haven't increased, a fall surge is still anticipated in the coming weeks or months, said Dr. Yves Léger.

"It's important for New Brunswickers to continue to pay attention every week to COVID updated numbers and report so that they're aware of what's happening in their communities around COVID," he said...

Seventy-nine more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19 than previously reported, the province announced Friday.

Public Health detected the discrepancy during a review of all COVID-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, Mathieu Chalifoux, the province's chief epidemiologist, told reporters during a technical briefing.

"Counts during the Omicron wave did not accurately reflect the situation as it unfolded," he said.

The new deaths raise the province's pandemic death toll to 572.

The province is confident in its new figures, following this "reconciliation exercise — one of the first of its kind in Canada," said Chalifoux...

COVID-19 has killed four more New Brunswickers, the number of sick health-care workers has jumped 44 per cent, and hospitalizations and new cases continue to rise, figures released Tuesday show.

A new Omicron subvariant with mutations shown to allow it to better evade immunity from vaccination and prior infection has also been confirmed in the province.

A single case of BA.2.75.2 was detected in September, confirmed Department of Health spokesperson Adam Bowie, although it was not listed separately in any of the weekly COVIDWatch reports since then.

"This would have been included within the 'BA.2' percentages of samples," Bowie said in an emailed statement.

The COVIDWatch report provides a breakdown of the five "major branches of the Omicron variant (i.e. BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5), each of which may have sub-variants contained within," he said.
