An epidemiologist in New Brunswick says, at the peak of the Omicron wave, over 5,000 new cases will be reported daily if further precautions aren’t taken.

The New Brunswick government provided a graph showing the projected number of COVID-19 cases expected in the province over the coming weeks, along with the corresponding increase in hospitalizations.

As of Tuesday, Chalifoux says there are 88 people in hospital due to COVID-19, a new high for the province.

Of those in hospital, 24 per cent have received their COVID-19 booster dose...

        N.B. COVID-19 roundup: Record-high of 94 in hospital nears Level 3 consideration
Number of patients in intensive care and on ventilators both dropped
        Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jan 12, 2022 1:33 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

New Brunswick set a record high for COVID-19 hospitalizations Wednesday, barrelling toward the province's threshold to consider changing to a more restrictive alert level.

Ninety-four people are now in hospital because of the virus, up six from Tuesday, including 10 in intensive care, down four.

Among the criteria for the province to consider moving from the current Level 2 of the COVID-19 winter plan to Level 3 is 100 active COVID-19 hospitalizations provincially or 50 COVID patients in intensive care.

The province is monitoring the situation "hour by hour," but hopes to avoid a lockdown, Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health, said earlier this week.

Instead, the province is urging everyone to limit their contacts as much as possible over the next couple of weeks, with hospitalizations and new cases projected to peak by the end of the month.

The virus has claimed the life of another New Brunswicker — a person in their 80s in the Saint John region, Zone 2, Public Health said in a news release. This raises the pandemic death toll to 174.

The number of people on ventilators has dropped to four from 11.

Of those hospitalized, 74 are over 60 and one is under 19...

            N.B. COVID-19 roundup: Province moves to Level 3 Friday at 11:59 p.m.
            Record-high 104 hospitalizations reached

New Brusnwick is moving to Level 3 of the COVID-19 winter plan, the most restrictive level, effective Friday at 11:59 p.m.

Premier Blaine Higgs made the announcement at a COVID briefing Thursday afternoon, citing a record-high 104 hospitalizations and rising cases.

The lockdown will last until Jan. 30 at 11:59 p.m...

...Public Health reported 369 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test-confirmed new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, putting the active caseload at 7,058, but that doesn't include the people testing positive on rapid tests.

N.B. COVID-19 roundup: 4 more deaths, 103 hospitalizations as province enters lockdown
Level 3 restrictions aim to avert life or death choices, says top doctor
                Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jan 14, 2022 1:10 PM AT | Last Updated: 17 minutes ago

Public Health reported four more COVID-related deaths Friday and 103 COVID hospitalizations, as New Brunswick prepares to enter a 16-day lockdown at midnight.

A person 70-79 in the Moncton region, Zone 1, a person 80-89 in the Saint John region, Zone 2, a person 70-79 in the Fredericton region, Zone 3, and a person 80-89 in the Edmundston region, Zone 4, have died as a result of COVID-19, raising the pandemic death toll to 182.

Of those in hospital, 11 are in intensive care and three are on ventilators.

New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health says the province is moving to the strictest level of its COVID-19 winter plan so doctors aren't forced to make decisions about which patients live or die.

Dr. Jennifer Russell says New Brunswick's hospitals weren't "doing super" before the pandemic and have been under extra strain throughout.

But the fast-spreading Omicron variant has "really compromised our ability to continue to deliver really quality acute services," she told CBC News Network on Friday, hours before the lockdown.

The biggest challenges, she said, are the increased number of hospitalizations for people with COVID-19 and the number of health-care workers who have tested positive and are isolating — 386, as of Thursday...

The province says one person between the ages of 70 and 79 has died in Zone 4, or the Edmundston area, due to the virus. It brings the province's total number of deaths to 183.

According to the online dashboard, there are 113 people in hospital, 12 in intensive care. Two patients are on ventilators.

A provincial news release said 60 of the people in hospital were admitted for reasons other than COVID-19.

"Sixty-seven per cent of those in ICU are either unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or it has been more than six months since their second dose," the release said.

A person age 50 to 59 in the Saint John region, a person 60 to 69 in the Edmundston region and two people in the Bathurst region — one 60 to 69 and the other 70 to 79, died due to the virus, according to the province.

It brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 187.

"Two people who had COVID-19 have died," Public Health said in a news release — a person 80 to 89 in the Campbellton region, Zone 5, and a person 90 or over in the Bathurst region, Zone 6.

Four more New Brunswickers have died due to COVID-19.

Public Health officials confirmed a person in their 70s from the Moncton region, a person in their 60s from the Fredericton area, and two people from the Edmundston zone, one in their 70s and one 90 and over have died.

There are also 123 people in hospital with the virus, with 11 patients requiring intensive care, and six who are on a ventilator.

Currently, 342 healthcare workers have tested positive for the virus and are now isolating.

However, after calling on volunteers, officials mentioned in less than 24-hours more than 1,600 New Brunswickers have responded to the call and want to support the province’s pandemic response effort.

“We are encouraged to see so many New Brunswickers step up and answer our call in one day,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard in the release...
