Nunavut capital declares local state of emergency as COVID-19 cases rise
    By The Canadian Press
Mon., May 3, 2021timer1 min. read

IQALUIT, Nunavut - Iqaluit?s city council has declared a local state of emergency over rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.

The capital city of about 8,000 people has 81 of the territory?s 85 active cases.

Iqaluit reported its first case of COVID-19 on April 14, but the territory?s chief public health officer has said the virus is likely to already have been in the city a week before that.

Dr. Michael Patterson says the variant first identified in the United Kingdom is the only strain of the COVID-19 virus circulating in the territory.

Last week, health officials also confirmed COVID-19 cases in Iqaluit?s jails and medical boarding home.

The emergency order comes into effect at midnight tonight, but Iqaluit is already under a strict lockdown that includes school closures and travel restrictions. ...

Nearly 1 in 5 of Iqaluit?s COVID-19 cases are youth
23 of the city?s 132 total cases are under 18
    By Dustin Patar

Youth account for almost one out of every five cases of COVID-19 in Iqaluit.

To date in the city, there have been 132 cases of the virus, including recoveries; 23 of those have been under the age of 18.

Last week, Nunavut?s chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson, had confirmed that there had been at least one positive case, but fewer than five, involving residents younger than 18.

Explaining the quick change, Patterson said at a news conference on Tuesday that Iqaluit?s COVID cases initially had spread from adult to adult, at places like essential worksites, but now they?re beginning to see household transmission.

?Essential workers have inadvertently brought it into the home and it?s involving their children,? Patterson said...

5 new cases of COVID-19 counted in Nunavut?s capital
Territory?s active case count now at 82, 80 of which are in Iqaluit
      By M?lanie Ritchot

Five new cases of COVID-19 and eight recoveries were reported in Nunavut on Wednesday, all in Iqaluit.

This brings the territory?s active case count to 82, 80 of which are in the capital city and two in Kinngait, Premier Joe Savikataaq announced through social media.

Vaccination clinics are ongoing and to date, 16,216 Nunavummiut have received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine and 12,621 have received both doses.

Since the outbreak began in the territory, there have been 63 recoveries...

Social gatherings now the main cause of COVID-19 spread in Iqaluit
?These activities put people at risk and will extend the outbreak if they continue,? Patterson says
        By Dustin Patar

Social gatherings, such as parties, are now the main factor contributing to the further spread of COVID-19 in Iqaluit.

?These activities put people at risk and will extend the outbreak if they continue,? said Nunavut?s chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson, during a news conference on Thursday.

Patterson said he is aware of at least three such events, but there may be others contact tracing teams are not aware of.

Because of this, Patterson has asked that anyone who has attended a party in the last three weeks to call the COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. eastern time and book a test.

Patterson clarified that this isn?t for enforcement purposes.

?We will test them, we?ll work with them to reduce this risk of spread and transmission but we will not be passing that information on to law enforcement,? he said.

In addition to avoiding interactions with other households, Patterson reminded residents that the territory?s public health measures include wearing masks when in public, including when alone outside on a walk or a run.

Tuesday?s announcement comes as eight recoveries and a dozen new cases were reported in Iqaluit, which ties April 16 as the highest single-day increase since the outbreak in the city began.

There are currently 84 active cases in Iqaluit...

COVID-19 cases in Kinngait among 10 resolved in Nunavut Saturday
Visits and social gatherings main cause of spread, say officials
CBC News ? Posted: May 08, 2021 1:23 PM CT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

There were more COVID-19 recoveries than new cases in Nunavut on Saturday.

According to the latest data from public health, seven more people in the territory had tested positive for the virus while ten others were considered to be recovered.

The recoveries include the two cases which had been in Kinngait. That means all 74 active cases in the territory are in Iqaluit.

The capital has been battling an outbreak of COVID-19 since mid-April.

In an update Thursday, Nunavut's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Michael Patterson, said visiting and social gatherings were the main cause of the virus's spread in the capital city.

He said there'd been at least three parties that triggered transmission, and that 30 of the cases at the time were people under 18...

Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq announced five new cases of COVID-19 in Iqaluit on Twitter Sunday.

But with seven recoveries, the number of active cases has now declined to 72, all in Iqaluit.

It's the second day in a row the territory counted more recoveries than new cases.

But COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc in the capital.

The Iqaluit Elders' Home was closed on Saturday, and residents were moved out of the facility after staff members were exposed to COVID-19.

On Friday, CBC News learned a client of the city's men's shelter had tested positive, prompting concern from the executive director of the society that runs the shelter about what would happen next.

In a news briefing Friday morning, the territory's chief public health officer said house parties and visiting were now the main source of spread of the virus...

There are 14 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nunavut and nine recoveries on Tuesday, according to the territory's latest numbers.

It's the highest number of confirmed cases in a day since this outbreak began in April. The previous highest number of cases confirmed in a day was on May 6, with 12 cases reported.

The new cases announced Tuesday bring the number of active cases in the territory to 75, all of which are in Iqaluit.

On Monday, Nunavut officials said the case counts in the city's jails and shelters were rising, however, most of the COVID-19 transmission in the city is still a result of parties and people visiting each other indoors...

                COVID-19 outbreak in a mine

An iron mine in Nunavut, in the far north, repatriates its 36 infected workers here

                FRANCIS HALIN
                Thursday, May 13, 2021 10:24 PM
                UPDATE Friday, May 14, 2021 01:00

An emergency medical evacuation took place quietly yesterday under the nervous eyes of police at Saint-Hubert airport to bring back 36 workers infected with COVID-19 from the Baffinland iron mine in Nunavut.

"Today we welcomed 36 mining workers from northern Canada who are infected with COVID-19", confirmed in the evening to the Journal Martine Lesage, spokesperson for the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of the Mont?r?gie-Center.

"If necessary, people who require a higher level of care or hospitalization can be brought to Charles-LeMoyne Hospital," she added.

Yesterday, Public Health could not say if it was the famous Indian variant more contagious, but the CBC TV channel reported cases there earlier this month.

Emergency medical teams were deployed yesterday to welcome more than thirty infected workers at Saint-Hubert airport.
"They were brought to the region by a chartered plane, to spend their period of isolation and, if necessary, to receive health services that cannot be provided on the spot," continued Martine Lesage, of the CISSS.
                ...
At 5:20 p.m., a Chrono Aviation plane landed, out of sight, on the tarmac with mining workers from Baffinland, owned by The Energy and Minerals Group and ArcelorMittal, on board, according to its website. .

"By the end of this week, we will have demobilized more than 65% of our workforce in order to stop the transmission of COVID-19 on the site," shared the mine on Facebook yesterday, during the day, refusing however to tell the Journal how many cases are still active there at this time.

Qualinet teams were on site to disinfect.

Yesterday, before the arrival of the infected workers, an employee of the airport was preparing in extremis to welcome "a particular flight of medical evacuation".

Police patrols, ambulances, buses ... swarmed on the tarmac.

A few minutes after landing, the vice-president of the Chrono Aviation group, Dany Gagnon, confirmed that one of his planes had been chartered.

?In the North, they are extremely proactive in repatriating them. In Nunavut if there is an outbreak, there are probably not the same number of doctors, ?he said.

                Workers in shock

Earlier in the day, the spouse of a mining worker said she was worried to see them unloading with their families, as the number of cases explodes in the mine temporarily closed due to a major outbreak.

?Of course I'm worried because I've heard that there are quite a few variants, so that annoys us a lot. Yes, ?she said on condition of anonymity.

?We are also told that the guys are pretty stuck on the plane. That also stresses me out, ?she added breathlessly, before regaining her composure.

During their isolation, the workers will be housed in a place designed for this purpose, Public Health said yesterday. All health measures will be taken: individual rooms, wearing of protective equipment for staff gravitating around the cases, 24/7 surveillance, etc., it was specified.

Nunavut officials plead for Iqaluit residents to stop gathering during COVID-19 outbreak

IQALUIT -- Nunavut's health minister says he wants Iqaluit residents to stop gathering so the city has a shot at a normal summer.

Lorne Kusugak scolded residents Friday at a news conference as a COVID-19 outbreak continued in the city of about 8,000 people.

"We have a very short summer and it seems it's getting shorter by the day," Kusugak said.

Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut's chief public health officer, said a recent gathering between multiple households in the city resulted in children becoming infected.

Public health measures in Iqaluit currently restrict all indoor and outdoor gatherings, but Patterson said the city's new cases have been linked to parties.

On Friday, 12 more cases of COVID-19 were reported in Iqaluit, which declared its first case on April 14, bringing the city's active case total to 78. There were 264 people in isolation.

Three Iqaluit residents with COVID-19 have been hospitalized in Ottawa and another has been released.

Kusugak pleaded with residents to follow public health measures...

Nunavut’s COVID-19 case count climbed to 22 as the premier reported seven new cases and two recoveries Wednesday morning.

The increase in numbers is partially due to a reporting error earlier in the week, where the government mistakenly said four cases recovered when they hadn’t, Premier Joe Savikataaq wrote on Twitter.

Kinngait has no active cases, as Savikataaq reported the last person in that hamlet known to have COVID-19 has recovered. The remaining 22 cases are all in Iqaluit.
