TORONTO -- Health officials logged 324 more infections of COVID-19 Wednesday and most of the infections were recorded in people without a vaccine.

According to data released by the Ministry of Health, 234 of the cases logged are in unvaccinated people. Thirty-two other cases were found in partially vaccinated people and 58 cases were logged in those who are fully vaccinated.

The province only began releasing the vaccination status of lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday after Ontario’s top doctor promised to do so last month.

Wednesday’s report brings the total number of cases of the novel coronavirus reported in the province to 553,449.

With 24,772 swabs processed in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health says that Ontario’s COVID-19 positivity rate stands at 1.7 per cent.

Another three deaths related to the disease were also confirmed in the previous day, bringing the province’s death toll to 9,412...

Ontario reports 513 new COVID-19 cases as vaccines administered top 20 million
113 people treated for COVID-related illnesses in intensive care
CBC News · Posted: Aug 12, 2021 10:39 AM ET | Last Updated: 14 minutes ago

Ontario reported 513 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, the most since mid-June, while the total number of vaccine doses administered in the province topped 20 million.

According to Health Minister Christine Elliott, 360 of the additional infections, or about 70 per cent, were in unvaccinated individuals. Another 56 of the cases were people who had only one shot of vaccine, she said, while 88 were fully vaccinated.

You may notice that the figures cited by Elliott add up to 504, not 513. The ministry has previously cautioned that the two numbers may not correspond directly because case counts and the data for the vaccination status of individual cases are taken from different sources and collected over a slightly different time frame.

Meanwhile, public health units administered another 49,167 doses of vaccines yesterday, the fewest on a Wednesday since March 10. A total of 20,047,991 shots have been administered in Ontario to date.

Roughly 72.5 per cent of eligible Ontarians — those aged 12 and older — have now had two doses of vaccines...

Ontario hits pause on plan to lift remaining COVID-19 restrictions as it mandates vaccine policies for some high-risk settings

The Ford government has put its plans to lift all remaining public health restrictions on hold as it ramps up its efforts to boost vaccination rates amid a Delta-driven fourth wave of the pandemic.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon as he outlined Ontario’s plan to make vaccination policies mandatory for some high-risk settings and to begin administering third doses to those at highest risk of severe complications from COVID-19.

The news comes after Moore suggested last week that Ontario was “seven to 10 days” away from reaching the vaccination milestones that would allow it to exit its Roadmap to Reopen and lift virtually all remaining public health restrictions, including capacity limits and limits on gathering sizes but excluding indoor masking.

Ontario’s rolling seven-day average of new cases has risen 54 per cent since then and there are increasing concerns that Ontario’s hospitals could soon see another influx of COVID-19 patients, predominantly involving unvaccinated individuals.

For that reason, Moore has opted to put any further reopening on hold while issuing a directive requiring hospitals and home and community care service providers to have vaccination policies for employees, contractors, students and volunteers requiring that they either be fully vaccinated or undertake regular rapid antigen testing for COVID-19 and complete an education session about the COVID-19 vaccine...

A member of Ontario’s COVID-19 science and modelling table has stepped down after he took to Twitter and accused the group of withholding modelling data that, according to him, projects a “grim fall.”

Dr. David Fisman, an infectious disease epidemiologist and physician, issued a letter to the science table, who advises the Ontario government, announcing his resignation on Monday, two days after coming under fire for his tweets.

“The Ontario science table has important modeling work that projects a grim fall,” Fisman wrote on Twitter early Saturday. “I don’t understand why they’re not releasing that. It’s important for people to understand what lies ahead, and what the stakes are.”

“If @COVIDSciOntario is arm’s length from the government it should release its modeling. If it’s not arm’s length from the government we should have that conversation,” he wrote in another Tweet several hours later...
