Ontario breaks daily COVID-19 record again with more than 4,800 new cases

TORONTO -- Ontario has logged more than 4,800 new COVID-19 cases for the first time in the pandemic, breaking a record for the most daily infections for a second day in a row.

Health officials reported 4,812 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday as well as 25 more deaths related to the disease.

Friday's infections mark a new record for the province and an increase from yesterday?s 4,726 cases?a record at the time. There were 4,156 COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday, 3,670 on Tuesday and 4,401 on Monday.

The rolling seven-day average for daily COVID-19 case counts now stands at about 4,292.

The province is also marking another grim milestone with more than 700 people being treated in Ontario intensive care units.

Of the 701 patients in the ICU, at least 480 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator...

Ontario reported more than 4,300 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, as those hospitalized with the virus topped 2,000 for the first time in the pandemic.

Provincial health officials reported 4,362 new coronavirus cases and 34 additional deaths today, the highest single-day death count since 47 fatalities were recorded on Feb. 19.

On Friday, Ontario reported a record 4,812 infections, while the previous record of 4,736 was logged on Thursday and 4,156 cases were reported on Wednesday.

The seven-day rolling average now stands at 4,370.

Ontario labs processed 56,852 tests in the past 24 hours, down from 64,304 the previous day.

The province?s positivity rate is now 6.9 per cent, compared to 8.2 per cent on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

Ontario hospitals had a record 2,065 patients due to COVID-19 infection in the past 24 hours, marking the first time hospitalizations surpassed 2,000 in the pandemic which was declared last March.

Of those hospitalized, 726 are in intensive care units and 501 are breathing with the help of a ventilator...

Ontario reported 4,250 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as well as 18 additional deaths, as overall hospital admissions and ICU occupancy increased to new whole-pandemic highs.

Ontario reported 4,362 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, and hospitalizations as counted by the Ministry of Health surpassed 2,000 for the first time in the whole pandemic.

The seven day rolling average of new cases is now 4,341, down slightly from 4,370 yesterday.

The Ministry of Health says there are now 2,107 people being treated for COVID-19 in hospitals, up from 2,065 yesterday.

The number of those in intensive care units grew to 741 from 726 on Saturday. At least 506 people are breathing with the help of a ventilator.

These numbers represent record highs for the entire length of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province. And the Ministry of Health says the total number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals on Sunday may be a low count on Sunday, as roughly 10 per cent of hospitals did not provide it data on occupancy...

TORONTO -- Ontario is reporting more than 4,400 new COVID-19 cases as the test positivity rate for the disease climbs back up to 10 per cent.

Monday?s report of 4,447 infections represents an increase from the 4,250 logged on Sunday. Another 4,362 cases were logged on Saturday and a record 4,812 were added on Friday.

With 42,873 tests processed in the last 24 hours, officials say Ontario?s COVID-19 positivity rate stands at 10.5 per cent. The province?s positivity rate reached 10.3 per cent a week ago today, marking the highest level seen since April 2020 when it climbed to 17 per cent. For context, health experts have said that any positivity rate above five per cent is ?too high.?

Meanwhile, the province?s health-care system continues to be stretched with an all-time high of 2,202 COVID-19 patients in hospital. Of those patients, 755 are being treated in intensive care and 516 are breathing on a ventilator.

As well, 19 more deaths related to the disease were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the provincial death toll to 7,735.

Ontario?s lab-confirmed COVID-19 case total now sits at 421,442, including those deaths and 370,844 recoveries.

Right now, there are 42,863 active cases of the disease throughout Ontario. The seven-day average for number of cases reported in the province is 4,347. A week ago, that number was 3,781...

TORONTO -- Ontario is reporting a single-day drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases as hospitalizations related to the disease reach new heights.

Tuesday?s report of 3,469 infections marks a significant decrease from Monday when 4,447 were logged. The province reported 4,250 cases on Sunday, 4,362 on Saturday, and a record 4,812 on Friday.

However, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the province continues to break records with 2,360 patients currently being treated. Of those patients, 773 are in an intensive care unit, a number never before seen in the pandemic, and 537 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Labs across Ontario processed 40,596 tests in the last 24 hours, which brings the positivity rate to 10 per cent, according to the Ministry of Health.

Since the pandemic began, the province has logged 424,911 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 374,213 recoveries and 7,757 deaths -- 22 of which were reported in the previous day.

Right now, there are 42,941 active cases of the novel coronavirus in Ontario. The seven-day average for number of cases reported is 4,318. Last Tuesday, that number was 3,868...

TORONTO -- COVID-19 infections in Ontario shot back up past 4,200 Wednesday as the number of patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) with the disease nears 800.

The 4,212 new cases mark a sharp increase over Tuesday?s total when 3,469 were logged. Before that, daily case numbers in the province had remained above the 4,000 mark for the better part of a week.

Wednesday?s report also marks the highest number of patients Ontario has ever seen in an ICU with COVID-19. Of the 2,335 in hospital with the disease, 790 are being treated in intensive care and 566 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Labs across the province processed 51,877 tests in the last 24-hour period, yielding a positivity rate of 7.9, according to the Ministry of Health, which is down from the 10 per cent recorded a day earlier.

Since the pandemic began, Ontario has logged 429,123 lab-confirmed cases of the disease, including 378,417 recoveries and 7,789 deaths. Data provided by the government shows that 32 of those deaths were reported in the last 24 hours alone.

This brings the active number of COVID-19 infections across the province to 42,917. The seven-day average for number of cases reported is 4,326. This time last week, that number was 4,208...

Ontario reported another 3,682 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 40 more deaths linked to the illness on Thursday, as overall admissions to intensive care units topped 800.

The 40 additional deaths in today's update are the most on a single day during the third wave of the pandemic in the province. The seven-day average of daily deaths, a lagging indicator that follows surges in cases, climbed to 27.1, also a third-wave high.

For comparison, the seven-day average of deaths in Ontario peaked at more than 60 during the second wave earlier this year, before most residents of long-term care and retirement homes had been vaccinated.

TORONTO -- Health officials in Ontario are reporting more than 4,500 new COVID-19 cases Friday and another 34 deaths linked to the disease.

The province reported 4,505 infections in the last 24 hours, a sharp increase from the 3,683 logged a day earlier.

Most of the cases reported today were found in Toronto and Peel Region, with the latter logging a record 1,232 infections.

Friday?s report is the third-highest daily case total recorded throughout the pandemic and brings Ontarios lab-confirmed COVID-19 case count to 437,310, including 387,712 recoveries and 7,863 deaths.

This brings the active number of infections in the province to 41,735. The seven-day average for number of cases reported sits at 4,132, down from 4,292 a week earlier...

Ontario reported nearly 4,100 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, continuing a decline in the seven-day rolling average of new cases.

Provincial health officials logged 4,094 new coronavirus cases, down from 4,505 infections on Friday.

The province reported 3,682 new cases on Thursday, 4,212 on Wednesday and 3,469 on Tuesday.

The seven-day rolling average dropped to 4,094 today, a notable decrease from 4,370 a week ago.

Twenty-four more virus-related fatalities were recorded on Saturday, bringing the province?s death toll to 7,887.

Another 4,332 people recovered from the disease in the past 24 hours, resulting in 41,473 active cases across the province.

Ontario also identified 3,014 lab-confirmed cases of variants of concern on Saturday, driven by the highly contagious dominant B.1.1.7 variant, which first emerged in the U.K.

Yesterday, 36 cases of the B.1.617 variant of interest, which was first discovered in India, were identified in Ontario- marking the first time the variant was confirmed in the province.

Due to widespread transmission of the variant in India, on Thursday the federal government banned travel from India and Pakistan for at least 30 days.

Ontario labs processed 52,160 tests in the past 24 hours, down from 56,206 tests the previous day.

Another 31,933 tests are still under investigation.

The province?s positivity rate is now 7.8 per cent, down one per cent from a day ago, according to the Ministry of Health...

MONTREAL -- Quebec reported Saturday that 1,106 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 343,794.

The seven-day case increase average is now 1,169, and the Quebec Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) is reporting 11,258 active COVID-19 cases in the province, which is 268 fewer than on Friday.

Of the total cases, 321,667 are reported to have recovered, an increase of 1,365 since Friday.

The province also added 13 more deaths due to the disease, including three in the past 24 hours, seven between April 17 and April 22, and three before April 17.

Since the pandemic began, Quebec has reported 10,869 deaths due to COVID-19 after four were removed from the overall total after investigations determined the cause of death was not related to the novel coronavirus.

Hospitalizations in Quebec dropped by 22 on Saturday. There are now 662 patients receiving care for COVID-19 in the province's hospitals. Of those, 181 people are in intensive care wards, an increase of nine.

Ontario reported 3,947 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday as the number of patients in intensive care units and on ventilators once again reached record highs.

The province registered 24 more deaths linked to the virus, bringing the official death toll to 7,911.

Sunday's daily case count marks the third time in the past week that the province has seen fewer than 4,000 new cases.

Some 2,126 people in the province remain in hospital because of the disease, a figure that has consistently been trending upward since the start of the third wave of the pandemic.

Of the patients hospitalized, 851 are in intensive care units, with 798 on ventilators. Similar to hospitalizations, both of these figures have been steadily increasing in recent weeks and have reached record highs each day for the past eleven days...

Ontario reported another 3,510 cases of COVID-19 on Monday, while the number of patients with the illness who need a ventilator to breathe topped 600.

According to the Ministry of Health, 877 people with COVID-19 are being treated in intensive care units across the province, twice as many as there were at the beginning of April.

Critical Care Services Ontario, a government agency that compiles daily a report for hospitals and health organizations, said that 59 patients were admitted to ICUs yesterday alone. Anthony Dale, president of the Ontario Hospital Association, said that a total of 1,415 COVID patients have been sent to ICUs this month so far.

Of those in intensive care, 605 patients are on a ventilator ? nearly double the number seen at the peak of the second wave in January.

Public health units also recorded the deaths of 24 more people with the disease, pushing the official toll to 7,935. The seven-day average of deaths has climbed to a third-wave high of 28.6.
