Manitoba announced 70 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday and reported its lowest test positivity rate in more than four months.

That rate dropped from 4.6 per cent to 4.3 Thursday — the lowest announced since Oct. 20, when it was at the same spot. Winnipeg's rate dipped to 3.8 per cent from four a day earlier.

A man in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region died, bringing the province's total number of coronavirus-linked deaths to 888.

Most of the new cases on Thursday are split between the Winnipeg health region, which has 31 cases, and the Northern Health Region, with 30, the province says in a news release.

There are seven new cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region and two in the Southern Health region, while the Prairie Mountain Health region reported no new infections.

No new cases of the more infectious B117 coronavirus variant first detected in the U.K. have been identified in Manitoba since one was announced on Tuesday, bringing the province's total to five...

Manitoba reported 64 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday as the province's test positivity rate dipped to its lowest point in more than four months.

The five-day rate — a rolling average of the proportion of COVID-19 tests that come back positive for the illness — dropped again to 3.9 per cent on Friday, from 4.3 the day before. In Winnipeg, that rate is now 3.3 per cent, down from 3.8, Dr. Jazz Atwal, Manitoba's deputy chief provincial public health officer, said at a news conference.

The last time it was below four per cent was on Oct. 13, when it was 3.5 per cent.

A man in his 70s from the Southern Health region has died after getting COVID-19, Atwal said, bringing Manitoba's total deaths in the pandemic to 889.

The province again expanded the list of people eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine on Friday — this time to include First Nations people born on or before Dec. 31, 1948, and members of the general population born on or before Dec. 31, 1928.

There are 50 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Sunday and two more people have died after getting the illness, the province says in a news release.

Manitoba's five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is still 3.7 per cent, the release says, while Winnipeg's dropped to 2.7 per cent from 3.2 on Saturday.

Most of the new cases are split evenly between the Northern Health Region and the Winnipeg health region, the release says, each with 21 new infections. There are also five new cases in the Southern Health region, two in the Interlake-Eastern health region and one in the Prairie Mountain Health region.

The deaths announced Sunday are both in the Winnipeg health region: a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s.

Manitoba reports one death and 35 more COVID-19 cases on Monday, the lowest daily case count since Oct. 7, when the province reported 32 cases.

Of the new cases, 16 are in the Winnipeg health region, 16 are in the Northern Health Region, two are in the Interlake-Eastern health region and one is in the Southern Health region. There are no new cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region.

"These numbers are quite encouraging," Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said.

"But we're still at a precarious spot right now, with variants of concern now in Manitoba, and we're starting to reopen things. We just want to keep those numbers down so we don't ever have to go back."

There are no new confirmed cases of the B117 coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom, leaving the total number reported in Manitoba at five.

A man in his 60s from the Winnipeg health region died, the province said.

That brings the total number of deaths related to the novel coronavirus to 896.

First cases of B.1.3.5.1 variant found in Manitoba

WINNIPEG -- The province is announcing a second COVID-19 variant has been discovered in Manitoba.

On Tuesday as part of the daily COVID-19 bulletin, the province said two instances of the B.1.3.5.1 variant, which was first reported in South Africa, have been found.

An additional one case of the B.1.1.7 variant, which is from the United Kingdom, was also found, bringing the total to six in Manitoba.

All of the variants were found in the Winnipeg area.

The province also announced two new deaths linked to COVID-19. There have been 898 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

One death was a man in his 70s from the Interlake-Eastern Health Region, and the second death was a man in his 50s from the Winnipeg Health Region. His death was linked to the outbreak at the Seven Oaks Hospital Unit 3U 4–7.

Manitoba also added 64 new cases, however, eight previously announced cases were removed due to data corrections. There have been 31,950 COVID cases since March 2020...

The two residents who died were both over 80, one in the North Central zone, the other in Saskatoon.

Manitoba continues to report some of the lowest daily counts of new COVID-19 cases the province has seen in months.

There were 51 new cases of the illness and three more COVID-19-related deaths reported Wednesday, according to a news release.

The update comes as the province announced plans to delay the second dose of COVID-19 vaccines by up to four months in order to get more of the population vaccinated faster.

The five-day test positivity rate in Manitoba is now at 3.8 per cent — a drop from Tuesday's four per cent — while in Winnipeg it is at 3.2 per cent, unchanged from Tuesday...

Manitoba has 54 more cases of COVID-19 and one more person has died from the virus.

Another case of the B1351 variant that was first identified in South Africa has been confirmed. The case was found in the Winnipeg region.

There are now nine confirmed cases involving more transmissible coronavirus variants in the province.

No details were given on whether the new case is travel-related, but Dr. Jazz Atwal, deputy chief provincial public health officer for Manitoba, said the province doesn't believe there is any risk to the public from any of the cases of more transmissible COVID-19 variants.

"I know a number of these are related to travel and I believe those cases have been closed already," he said during a news conference Friday.

The five-day test positivity rate is three per cent in Manitoba and 2.4 per cent in Winnipeg. The province's test positivity rate hasn't been that low since Oct. 10.

Public health officials advise one additional death in a person with COVID-19 has been reported today:
? a female in her 80s from the Northern health region.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 3.5 per cent provincially and 2.4 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30 a.m. today, 63 new cases of the virus have been identified. The total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 32,288.

Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified.

Today?s COVID-19 data shows:
? zero cases in Interlake?Eastern health region;
? 36 cases in the Northern health region;
? zero cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
? two cases in the Southern Health?Sant? Sud health region; and
? 25 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

The data also shows:
? 1,145 active cases and 30,236 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19;
? 54 people in hospital with active COVID-19 as well as 110 people in hospital with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require care, for a total of 164 hospitalizations;
? 10 people in intensive care units with active COVID-19 as well as 12 people with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care, for a total of 22 ICU patients;
? due to a data correction, one death that had been reported earlier has been removed so the total number of deaths in people with COVID-19 is 907; and
? the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases of B.1.1.7 is six and B.1.351 is three, bringing the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases to nine.

Laboratory testing numbers show 1,390 tests were completed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February 2020 to 538,759.

An outbreak has been declared at St. Boniface Hospital unit E5 in Winnipeg. The facility has been moved to the Critical (Red) level on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System.

The chief provincial public health officer reminds Manitobans to self-isolate immediately at the onset of possible COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild. This means staying home from work, school or other daily activities, and not visiting with others. Testing should be done as soon as possible once symptoms appear. Health officials have confirmed 13 new cases of more contagious coronavirus variants in Manitoba, including five new cases of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom and eight cases of the variant first found in South Africa.

All cases are from the Winnipeg Health region, and the majority are either travel or close-contact related, the provincial government said in a news release.

Most of the cases of the B1351 variant first found in South Africa were found through retroactive screening of samples from February, the province said.

"At this time, there is no evidence of widespread community transmission of either variant of concern. Case investigations continue and the public will be informed should the risk profile change," the news release said.

There have now been 22 cases of variants of concern confirmed in Manitoba, including 11 cases of the B117 variant ? the variant first found in the U.K. ? and 11 of the B1351 variant.

The announcement of the new variant cases comes one day after the province announced it would start screening all COVID-19 samples for the B1315 variant, as well as the B117 variant.

There are 66 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one new death in Manitoba on Tuesday, health officials announced.

Almost half of new infections in Northern Health Region, province says

There are 77 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Wednesday and one more person has died after getting the illness, the province said in a news release.

Nearly half those cases ? 36 ? are in the Northern Health Region, the release said. There are also 24 new cases in the Winnipeg health region, nine in the Southern Health region, six in the Prairie Mountain Health region and two in the Interlake-Eastern Health region.

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate is still 3.8 per cent, the release said, while Winnipeg's rose to 2.9 per cent from 2.7.

The death announced Wednesday, which brought Manitoba's total coronavirus-linked fatalities to 908, was a woman in her 90s linked to Winnipeg's River East Personal Care Home.

There are now 162 COVID-19 patients in hospital in Manitoba, down by one since Tuesday. Twenty-one of those people are in intensive care, also down by one.

No new cases of any coronavirus variants of concern were reported on Wednesday, one day after a total of 13 new cases of the variants first detected in South Africa and the U.K. were announced. That update brought the total number of variant cases identified in Manitoba to 22...

Public may have been exposed to highly transmissible coronavirus variant at 3 Winnipeg locations
91 new COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths linked to illness also announced Thursday

People in Winnipeg might have been exposed to a highly contagious coronavirus variant last weekend, the province says in a news release.

The possible public exposures to two probable cases of the B117 variant first identified in the U.K. happened on the following days at these locations:

March 5 ? Silver Heights Restaurant at 2169 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg from 5 to 7 p.m.
March 6 ? Chicken Chef Restaurant at Unicity Mall, 3770 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg from 5 to 7 p.m.
March 6 ? Garden City Hairstylists in the Garden City Shopping Centre at #143-2305 McPhillips St. in Winnipeg from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Anyone worried they were potentially exposed should call Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 (toll-free) to see if they need to be tested for COVID-19, the release says.

A spokesperson for the province said the two probable cases of the B117 variant and their close contacts are self-isolating and waiting for confirmed test results to determine whether their cases are in fact that variant.

No further details will be given for privacy reasons, the spokesperson said.

The total number of variant cases identified in Manitoba remains 22: 11 of the variant first discovered in the U.K. and 11 of the B1351 variant first identified in South Africa.

Of those 22 cases, eight are linked to travel and 11 are close contacts of known cases. Contact tracers don't know how or where the other three people got the variant, the provincial spokesperson said.

"We are continuing with case investigations, particularly for the unknown acquisition cases, and will notify the public if there is widespread risk identified," they said.

"At this time, there is no evidence of widespread community transmission of either variant of concern but investigations continue."

Another person has died and Manitoba has 104 new cases of COVID-19, health officials announced Friday, the one-year anniversary of the first cases of the coronavirus in the province.

They also announced a slight loosening of restrictions to allow small groups of people from different households to sit together on restaurant patios, and the removal of masks while seated and distanced from other households at churches.

The most recent death was a woman in her 80s linked to the outbreak at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. This brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Manitoba to 912.

This is the first time in more than three weeks that Manitoba has a daily case count above 100. The last time was on Feb. 18, when 139 cases were announced.

"Our case numbers are very slowly creeping up, if you noticed over the last week or so, as has the test positivity," Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's chief public health officer, said at a news conference.

Manitoba's five-day test-positivity rate rose to 4.1 per cent on Friday, up from 3.7 per cent on Thursday. In Winnipeg, the rate is three per cent, up from 2.7 per cent.
