136 more coronavirus variant cases discovered in Manitoba
53 more COVID-19 cases, no new deaths from the illness reported Monday
Rachel Bergen ? CBC News ? Posted: Mar 29, 2021 10:24 AM CT | Last Updated: 21 minutes ago

Another 136 cases of the more contagious coronavirus variants of concern have been identified in Manitoba, public health officials say.

Most of the new variant cases ? 117 ? are in the Winnipeg health region, while 14 are from the Southern Health region and five are in the Interlake-Eastern health region, the province said in a news release.

That brings the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases in the province to 259.

The spike in cases is because the province is now reporting variant cases identified through lab screening, before they're subjected to sequencing at a lab, Dr. Brent Roussin said at a news conference on Monday.

"To date, we have only been reporting sequence-positive VOCs [variants of concern], but because our manner of screening has become so precise, Manitoba will now start to report on all samples that screen positive as a variant of concern," Roussin said.

"That's why today we're going to see a jump in the number of variant of concern cases."

Roussin says many other jurisdictions are reporting the different coronavirus strains this way.

"Sequencing is, of course, a much more complex and time-consuming component of detection of these variants," he said.

That further testing is also becoming less important because the B117 coronavirus variant, which was first detected in the U.K., is becoming more dominant in Manitoba, as it is in many other jurisdictions, Roussin said.

"One day last week, up to a third of our cases had screened positive for B117, and this is showing us that the B117 strain, like many other jurisdictions in Canada, is becoming the predominant strain [in Manitoba]," he said.

Manitoba is also reporting 53 more COVID-19 cases and no new deaths from the illness on Monday.

Of those cases, most are in the Northern Health region ? 27 ? and in the Winnipeg area ? 21. There are also two cases in both the Interlake-Eastern and Prairie Mountain health regions, and one case in the Southern Health region.

      Test positivity rate rises

Manitoba's test positivity rate is 4.2 per cent, up from 3.9 per cent on Sunday. Winnipeg's rate is up to 3.3 per cent, from 3.1 the day before.

The total number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Manitoba is up to 149 on Monday, from 140 the day before. That includes 27 patients in intensive care units...

The total number of variant of concern cases identified in Manitoba is now 250, the province said in its Tuesday update. (CBC)

Manitoba is reporting 77 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and no new deaths from the illness, a provincial news release says.

Of the new cases, 43 are in the Winnipeg health region. There are also 27 cases in the Northern Health region, five cases in the Southern Health region, and one case each in the Interlake-Eastern and Prairie Mountain health regions.

Another 11 screened or sequenced cases stemming from the more contagious coronavirus variants have also been identified, the province said Tuesday.

Of the newly identified variant cases, seven are in the Winnipeg health region, three are in the Southern Health region and one is in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

The newly announced cases involving coronavirus variants are not included in the province's daily total of new COVID-19 cases. Variant numbers are announced after a variant has been identified through screening or sequencing, which means they involve COVID-19 cases that were previously reported.

The total number of variant of concern cases in Manitoba is now 250.

The majority of those cases that have been categorized ? 199 ? are the B117 variant, which was first discovered in the U.K.. Another 14 involve the B1351 variant, first seen in South Africa. There are another 37 variant cases that have yet been categorized.

On Monday, the province said there were 259 total cases of variants, but said that was due to a data processing error.

Manitoba's test positivity rate is now 4.3 per cent, up from 4.2 per cent on Monday. Winnipeg's rate is up to 3.5 per cent, from 3.3 the day before.

The total number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Manitoba is up to 150 on Tuesday, from 149 on Monday. That includes 31 patients in intensive care units...

Manitoba's chief public health officer warned that the province is racing against an impending third wave of COVID-19 cases as it tries to keep cases down while ramping up vaccines.

Two more people have died due to COVID-19 and there are 62 new cases of the coronavirus in Manitoba, health officials announced Tuesday.

In his first public briefing since the Easter holiday weekend, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said we won't see the impacts of any possible increased transmission from gatherings until two to four weeks from now.

"Because we've seen the variant cases here, if the transmission includes that variant, then this could be where we see our third wave begin," he said...

There are 139 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Thursday and three more people have died from the illness, the province says in a news release.

The update came as Manitoba announced its first death linked to a coronavirus variant of concern. A man in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region died in late March after contracting the B117 strain first identified in the U.K., the release says.

The sequencing results that determined the case was a variant came back after the man died, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said on a call with reporters.

Sixty of the new COVID-19 cases announced on Thursday are in the Winnipeg health region, the release says.

There are 55 in the Northern Health Region, 18 in the Prairie Mountain Health region and six in the Southern Health region. No new cases were announced in the Interlake-Eastern health region, the release says.

The COVID-19 deaths announced Thursday are a man and a woman in their 70s, with the latter linked to the outbreak at Holy Family Home, and a woman in her 80s. All three deaths were in the Winnipeg health region, the release says.

Manitoba may soon tighten its pandemic rules once again, the leader of the province's vaccine task force cautioned as officials reported the highest daily COVID-19 case count in months.

"I just want to be clear that we are in the beginnings of a third wave in Manitoba. So your actions are critical right now," Dr. Joss Reimer said Friday, urging people to reduce their contacts, stay home whenever possible and wear a mask when spending time with people they don't live with ? even if it's outside.

"If we can't control the transmission of COVID-19, Manitobans may see more restrictions in the days ahead."

Reimer's warning came as the province reported 179 new infections on Friday, the highest single-day increase since Jan. 24 ? near the tail end of Manitoba's second wave of COVID-19. The province announced 222 cases that day, which was also the last time it posted a daily increase above 200.

Three more deaths linked to the illness were also announced on Friday, including a man in his 20s from the Northern Health Region, the province said in a news release.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s in the Winnipeg health region have also died, the province said. The woman's death was linked to an outbreak at Golden Links Lodge. Those deaths bring Manitoba's total to 949...

Manitoba is reporting 135 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and one death ? a woman in her 80s from the Winnipeg health region.

Of the new cases, most ? 71 ? are in the Winnipeg health region, the province said in a news release.

There are also 33 new cases in the Northern Health Region, 18 in Southern Health, nine in Prairie Mountain Health and four in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

The latest COVID-19 death brings Manitoba's total linked to the illness to 949 (one previously reported death was removed from the province's total due to a data correction).

The province is warning the public of possible exposures to a more contagious coronavirus variant at two Winnipeg stores earlier this month.

People may have been exposed to the B117 coronavirus variant, which was first discovered in the U.K., at the Costco at 1499 Regent Ave. on April 1, between 2 and 3 p.m., and at the No Frills grocery store at 1500 Plessis Rd. between 2:30 and 4 p.m., the release says.

Anyone concerned about their potential exposure to the B117 variant should call Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 to determine whether they need to be tested, the province says.

On Friday, the province reported a total of 376 cases of variants of concern, including 332 cases of the B117 variant and 20 cases of B1351 variant, which was first discovered in South Africa. Manitoba is considering mandatory masks outdoors and a renewed clampdown on indoor activities as daily COVID-19 case tallies continue to hit triple digits.

Manitoba announced 114 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths on Monday and the province's top doctor hinted more restrictions may soon come into effect.

"This is a third wave," said Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial health officer. "If we don't act now, we will be right back into stricter restrictions very soon."

The latest data shows close contacts of positive cases have been increasing, and more cases are being tied to private gatherings, Roussin said.

More young people age 10 to 19 appear to be contracting the virus outside of school settings, he said.

The provincial test positivity rate is up to 6.2 per cent, up from 5.7 per cent on Sunday.

The number of people in hospital dropped from 141 on Sunday to 135 on Monday.

Manitoba announced 135 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths Tuesday, as well as the first reported case of a more contagious coronavirus variant detected in the province's north.

The number of cases stemming from variants in the province also jumped by 67.

That brings the total number of variant cases to 479, up from 412 on Saturday. The province only reports variant cases on its provincial dashboard from Tuesday to Saturday, so the uptick represents at least two days of data.

There are 154 active variant cases, up from 101, and 323 people have recovered, according to the province.

Of the new deaths, one is a man in his 80s from Winnipeg and is connected with an outbreak at Holy Family Centre.

The other death announced Tuesday is a Winnipeg man in his 60s. His death, which is linked to the B117 coronavirus variant originally detected in the U.K., brings the total number of variant-related deaths to two.

Eighty-nine per cent of the variant cases in Manitoba are the B117 strain, according to the province. About four per cent are B1351 and seven per cent require further confirmation.

The bulk of variant cases to date have surfaced in Winnipeg. Half are linked to close contacts and a quarter have no known source. The rest are tied to travel or require more investigation...

Manitoba announced three more deaths and 86 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday ? the first day with fewer than 100 cases in just over a week.

Officials have announced triple-digit new cases every day since April 6, when 62 cases were reported.

The provincial test positivity rate also declined slightly Wednesday, to 5.3 per cent from six per cent. Winnipeg's rate was 5.2 per cent, down from 5.7 per cent.

Despite the slightly slower numbers and test positivity rates announced Wednesday, on the whole both have been trending upward in recent weeks.

The seven-day average for new daily cases sits at about 128 ? it was 77 two weeks ago. Similarly, though the provincial test positivity rate declined in the past two days, it remains 1.5 percentage points higher than it was two weeks earlier...
