Manitoba reported more severe outcomes from COVID-19 in its latest update, and more of the virus detected in Winnipeg wastewater as of late August.

The province's latest report, which was released Thursday and covers the week of Aug. 28 to Sept. 3, says three more deaths have been added to Manitoba's pandemic total, bringing that number to 2,118.

That's a smaller increase than the 10 deaths recorded in last week's update.

During the latest reporting period, 70 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19, up from 67 the week before.

Of those, 16 were admitted to intensive care units, up from nine the previous week...

Manitoba has added 19 more COVID-19 deaths to its pandemic total in the latest provincial update, the highest jump in more than three months.

That's the biggest increase in more than three months — the total rose by 24 deaths the week of May 29 to June 4.

The province's latest report, which was released Thursday and covers the week of Sept. 4 to Sept. 10, says the total number of people who have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic is now 2,137, up from 2,118 the previous week.

There was an increase of three deaths in last week's update.

CBC News has requested comment from Manitoba Public Health about the reason for the jump, but didn't immediately receive a response.

During the latest reporting period, 65 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19, down from 70 the week before.

Manitoba reported more severe outcomes from COVID-19 in its latest update, and added six more deaths to its pandemic total.

The province's latest report, which was released Thursday and covers the week of Sept. 11 to Sept. 17, says the total number of people who have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic is now 2,143, up from 2,137 the previous week.

There were 11 admitted to intensive care units, up slightly from 10 the previous week.

Manitobans should stay vigilant about COVID-19, as above-average ‘hazard index’ shows

              Posted October 12, 2022 1:25 pm

New COVID-19 statistics show Manitobans should remain vigilant about the virus.

The province’s latest ranking on the hazard index — which combines current infections, hospital strain and mortality — is at a seven, while Canada as a whole is sitting at a six.

Those numbers are from COVID-19 Resources Canada, a database that collects information about the virus and the health-care responses from across the country.

Winnipeg epidemiologist Cynthia Carr says the numbers may have gone down since school returned, but Manitobans aren’t out of the woods yet when it comes to COVID-19.

“We just had Thanksgiving weekend, so lots of people travelling, getting together,” Carr told 680 CJOB’s Connecting Winnipeg.

“We’ll have to look at the impact of that, (as well as) moving into the next holiday season where people tend to get together.”...

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Manitoba decreased slightly in the latest Manitoba Health surveillance report, but remain much higher than in early October.

Manitoba saw an increase in both COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths linked to the virus last week, health officials say.

The province’s latest epidemiology update shows 116 people were admitted to hospital between Oct. 23 and 29, up from 100 the week before.

Of the latest hospitalizations, seven required the intensive care unit, according to the report. The previous week saw 16 ICU admissions due to the virus.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Manitoba decreased slightly in the latest Manitoba Health surveillance report, but ICU admissions are up slightly from the previous week.

From Oct. 30 to Nov. 5, 110 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 116 the previous week, says the province's latest weekly surveillance report, released Thursday.

Eight more people were admitted to intensive care units, up from seven ICU admissions the previous week.

The number of COVID-related deaths in Manitoba since the beginning of the pandemic in now 2,256, up 24 from the previous week's report.

There were 341 lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba during the most recent reporting week, but that number is likely a significant undercount of the true number of infections, due to limited access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Nova Scotia reported 15 new COVID-19 deaths Thursday, but the province says the deaths did not happen within the latest reporting week, which ran from Nov. 1 to Nov. 7.

The 15 deaths were listed in a new category on Nova Scotia's COVID-19 dashboard titled "New Deaths from Previous Reporting Period."

The new category was launched on the dashboard on Nov. 3. A spokesperson for the province said deaths reported in this category could be from any time in the past.

"Confirming cause of death for people takes time as there are a number of different circumstances to analyze. Therefore, deaths are subject to a lag in reporting. This has been the case throughout the pandemic," Khalehla Perrault told CBC News in an email.

The province noted no new COVID-19 deaths for the current reporting period. This marks the second consecutive week of no reported deaths. Since March 2020, the province has reported 617 deaths.

The province reported 671 new cases confirmed by PCR tests for that same time period — a daily average of 96. This is down from last week, when there were 792 PCR-confirmed cases.

COVID-19 was deadlier in 2022 than in previous years in Manitoba

While many Manitobans consider the COVID-19 pandemic a thing of the past, 2022 is the year with the most deaths from the disease in the province.

After more than two years of the pandemic, the majority of health measures are no longer in effect in Manitoba. However, more people have died from COVID-19 this year than in 2020 or 2021.

In fact, as of December 19, 2022, 958 people have died from the disease, according to Manitoba Public Health. For the year 2020, this number is 667 and for 2021, it is 725.

So 2022 was the deadliest year, even though some Manitobans believe the pandemic is over , according to Health Sciences Center internist Jillian Horton.

If you showed these statistics to the average Manitoban, they would be surprised. , she argues. Dr. Horton says the majority of people no longer view the pandemic as an important issue, but the reality is different for patients at our hospital.

                              More Worrying Variants

Because of the Omicron variant and its subvariants, more people have come into contact with COVID-19 in 2022, notes University of Manitoba medical microbiologist Jason Kindrachuk.

“ Even less deadly viruses can have a big impact if they spread far enough in a population ”
                              — A quote from Jason Kindrachuk, medical microbiologist at the University of Manitoba

Dr Kindrachuk adds that the emergence of new coronavirus variants is virtually inevitable. According to him, the latter could be more transmissible, deadly or resistant to vaccines.

The microbiologist does not believe that Canada is ready for a next pandemic, even after that of COVID-19. Infrastructure and knowledge take time to put in place [...] We will have to learn from our experiences very quickly.

Alors que de nombreux Manitobains considèrent la pandémie de COVID-19 comme chose du passé, l'année 2022 est celle où le plus de morts ont été enregistrés en lien avec la maladie dans la province.

...A total of two people were admitted to hospital for flu symptoms, says the most recent respiratory virus surveillance report, which covers the week of Jan. 8-14. That's down from 12 the previous week.

There was also one flu-related death reported in that same time span, compared with four the week before.

As well, there were 18 new reported cases, compared with 52 in the Jan. 1–7 report.

The current weekly test positivity for Influenza A, which is the prime strain detected this season, is 1.9 per cent, whereas it was 2.8 per cent a week earlier.

The national rate is six per cent.

COVID and flu-related deaths, hospitalizations drop in Manitoba during 1st week of January

Similarly, hospital admissions due to COVID dropped by 10. There were 38 reported the previous week and 28 in the most recent one.

Nine COVID-related deaths were reported in the latest report, compared with 25 in the prior one.

Despite the improvements, the weekly test positivity rate for COVID-19 increased slightly between the two reporting periods, going from 10.3 per cent to 12.3.

There were 122 new cases (down from 125 in the Jan. 1–7 report). Those numbers, though, are considered to be a significant undercount due to limited testing offered by public health. The province does not track results from home tests.

Older adults continue to be at higher risk for COVID-19 infection, associated hospital admissions and fatalities, the report says...
