208 new COVID-19 cases, 12 more deaths in Manitoba on Thursday
Provincial test positivity rate dips below 10 per cent for first time since early November
CBC News ? Posted: Jan 07, 2021 11:54 AM CT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

There are 208 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Thursday and 12 more people have died from the illness, the province says.

The latest deaths include a Northern Health Region man in his 30s and six deaths linked to outbreaks across the province, a news release says.

Manitoba's five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is down to 9.9 per cent, the first time that figure has dipped below 10 per cent since Nov. 9. In Winnipeg, the rate is 10.5 per cent, the release says.

The latest update comes one day before the expiration of the province's current public health orders, which ban most gatherings and the sale of non-essential items. Those rules expire at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

But on a conference call with reporters on Thursday, acting deputy chief provincial public health officer Dr. Jazz Atwal said the specifics of what will replace those restrictions are still being discussed — though there's no indication any rules will be lifted.

Atwal said those details are likely to be revealed on Friday...

Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin urged Manitobans to press on as he announced 133 new cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths on Monday.

"We're certainly not back to normal, we're not out of the woods, but we are seeing the trajectory that we were wanting to see," he said at a news conference.

"We need to continue to have Manitobans still put in that hard work to limit the transmission of this virus."

That hard work needs to be kept up following the holiday season, Roussin said, standing by his decision last week to extend code red restrictions until at least Jan. 22.

There are currently 538 cases of COVID-19 linked to in-person gatherings, and these cases are linked 2,879 close contacts, he said...

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba has announced five more deaths related to COVID-19, along with 158 new cases of COVID-19 – the majority of which were in the Northern Health Region which now has the most active cases in the province.

The deaths reported on Wednesday include a man in his 50s from the Northern Health Region and a man in his 80s from Winnipeg.

Three of the deaths were linked to outbreaks in the province, including a man in his 80s whose death has been linked to the outbreak at the McCreary/Alonsa Health Centre, a man in his 70s from Winnipeg whose death has been linked to the outbreak at the Southeast Personal Care Home, and a woman in her 80s from Winnipeg whose death has been linked to the outbreak at the Charleswood Care Centre.

With the most recent deaths, the province's total number of deaths related to the virus is 753.

The 158 new cases on Wednesday brought the total number of COVID-19 cases in Manitoba to 26,695, which accounts for three cases that were removed due to a data correction. Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate is 9.6 per cent.

"Today's numbers continue to be encouraging – we are heading in a good direction," said Dr. Jazz Atwal, Manitoba's acting deputy chief public health officer. "The actions taken by Manitobans are making a difference. However it is too early to start a victory lap."...

There are 261 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Thursday and two more people have died from the illness, the province says.

More than half those cases — 139 — are in the Northern Health Region, a news release says. Another 75 new cases are in the Winnipeg health region.

The cases in northern Manitoba are partly due to gatherings in people's homes and in public, the province's acting deputy chief public health officer said on a conference call with reporters.

Dr. Jazz Atwal urged people in that part of the province to listen to public health orders, and said contact tracing investigations linked some cases to people visiting others from outside their household.

Atwal did not rule out the possibility that stricter restrictions could be left in place in northern Manitoba and rules loosened in other regions when provincewide public health orders expire next Friday. Those rules include bans on most gatherings and the sale of non-essential items...

Manitoba reported 189 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with more than half of those in the northern part of the province.

The update marks the fourth day this week the Northern health region bore the brunt of Manitoba's new COVID-19 infections. Since Monday, the region has reported 500 confirmed cases of the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Northern Manitoba has seen cases skyrocket this week in connection with outbreaks in several communities, health officials have said.

That includes the northwestern town of Lynn Lake, which is grappling with an outbreak that as of Saturday had climbed to 132 active cases among a population of fewer than 500.

Fifty of the community's 209 households were in isolation on Saturday, the town said...

Manitoba announced 118 cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths on Monday, the 11th consecutive day the province has recorded single-digit deaths.

The latest ones are connected to current outbreaks, including a man in his 80s at the Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home in Opaskwayak Cree Nation in the Northern Health Region.

The other three deaths are in the Winnipeg health region — a man in his 60s linked to the outbreak at the Southeast Personal Care Home, a woman in her 70s linked to the outbreak at Concordia Place and a woman in her 80s linked to the outbreak at Health Sciences Centre WRS3.

Of the 118 cases, 46 are in the northern region, which has been the location of many of the new cases in the past week.

There are 11 more deaths and 111 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba on Tuesday.

It's the first day the province has had a double-digit number of deaths since Jan. 7, when there were 12. The total number of COVID-related deaths in Manitoba is now 783.

Due to a data correction, one death that had been reported earlier has been removed.

Despite the bump into double digits for deaths, the daily case count is seven fewer than on Monday. That is a trend in the right direction compared to November, when daily case counts ranged from the low 400s to as high as 546.

As well, the province's five-day test positivity rate continues to decline, though just 1,462 tests were done. It is now 9.9 per cent, compared to 10.6 on Monday. The rate is 7.4 per cent in Winnipeg.

As a result, the province is in a position to consider loosening current restrictions, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Brent Roussin said...

There are 154 more COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Wednesday and six more people have died from the illness, the province says in a news release.

Nearly half of those cases — 70 — are in the Northern Health Region, the release says. That part of the province has been hit hard by outbreaks in several small communities in recent weeks.

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate dropped to 9.5 per cent, while Winnipeg's dropped to 6.7 per cent, the release says. That's the lowest test positivity rate in Winnipeg since October.

Hospitalizations linked to COVID-19 in Manitoba also dropped slightly on Wednesday, with 273 in hospital and 36 in intensive care, the release says.

A man in his 50s and a woman in her 60s from the Winnipeg health region died. Four people linked to outbreaks across the province are also among the latest deaths: a man and a woman in their 60s, both linked to Winnipeg's Southeast Personal Care Home, and two women in their 90s — one linked to Winnipeg's Holy Family Home and the other connected to the McCreary/Alonsa Health Centre.

More than half the new cases announced on Thursday — 105 — were in the Northern Health region, where several small communities have been grappling with outbreaks in recent days.
