COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. begin to rise as province braces for early flu season

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. are up this week, bucking a general downward trend that started in late July.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 367 people in hospital with the virus Thursday, an increase of 20 per cent from last week's numbers when there were 305 people in hospital. Thirty people are in critical care.

Provincial health authorities reported 16 new deaths linked to COVID-19, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,283.

The government says the weekly numbers it shares are preliminary and are often changed retroactively due to delays in the count and a new method the province uses to measure weekly cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

Deaths are now calculated based on whether they occurred within 30 days of a positive COVID-19 test, whether or not the coronavirus has been confirmed as the underlying cause. The centre says it is evaluating the cause of each person's death retroactively to better understand "true COVID-19 mortality.''...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. are up slightly again this week as the province moves into the fall respiratory illness season.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 369 people in hospital with the virus Thursday, an increase of two patients from last week's report. The number of people in critical care has fallen by one to 29.

In the week leading up to Oct. 1, 19 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the total number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,321.

A total of 697 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by B.C. labs in the same week, marking a 9.6-per-cent increase from the previous week. Case totals are understood to be significant underestimates of the true spread of the disease because most people are now testing themselves at home...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. dipped slightly as the number of patients in intensive care dropped by more than a third since the B.C. Centre for Disease Control's last weekly report.

The BCCDC reported 365 people in hospital with the virus Thursday, a decrease of four patients from last week's report, while the number of people in critical care fell from 29 to 19.

In the week leading up to Oct. 8, 25 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,370...

There were 389 people in B.C. hospitals with COVID-19 on Thursday – the highest total the province has seen in two months, but still within the general range B.C. has seen since spring.

As the weather in much of the province finally turns more seasonal, the latest hospitalization data comes alongside indications that a long-predicted rise in respiratory illness is underway, even if COVID-19 case counts have not yet surged.

The current hospital population reported each week by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control includes both those with severe cases of COVID-19 requiring hospitalization and those who are hospitalized for other reasons and test positive incidentally...

This week, the BCCDC reported data for the epidemiological week of Oct. 9 to 15. During that time, there were 628 new, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, 174 new hospital admissions, 31 new critical care admissions and 32 deaths within 30 days of a positive lab test.

All of those data points come with caveats, however.

The weekly case count reflects only positive lab-based tests, and tests are only offered to people with symptoms under very specific circumstances.

The vast majority of B.C. residents cannot get a lab test for COVID-19, even if they have symptoms, and the BCCDC does not collect or publish results from at-home, rapid antigen tests.

As a result of this, the independent B.C. COVID-19 Modelling Group estimated in August that the province is undercounting coronavirus infections by a factor of 100...

COVID-19 hospitalizations have dropped by nearly a quarter while the number of patients in critical care has remained about the same, according to the latest numbers from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control's weekly report.

The BCCDC reported 292 people hospitalized with the disease on Thursday, down from 389 a week ago. The province's dashboard showed 20 people in the ICU, down from 21 last Thursday.

The province last reported fewer than 300 people in hospital with COVID-19 in June.

In the week leading up to Oct. 22, 44 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,485.

That same week, 534 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by B.C. labs, down from the week before.

However, experts say B.C. under-reports all key COVID metrics, including deaths, with the BCCDC noting that its numbers are subject to revision...

The surprising downward trend in B.C.'s hospitalized COVID-19 population continued this week, with the number of test-positive patients in hospital dropping to 286.

This week's data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control also included a decreasing number of newly confirmed infections and new admissions to hospital, though, as always, the data comes with many caveats.

The current hospital population includes every patient who tests positive for COVID-19, regardless of whether the disease is the underlying reason for their hospitalization.

Provincial health officials have previously said between 40 and 50 per cent of hospitalizations included in the weekly total are caused by COVID-19, while the rest are incidental cases...

COVID-19 hospitalizations and the number of patients in critical care have remained stable from a week ago, according to the latest numbers from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

The BCCDC reported 290 people hospitalized with the disease on Thursday, up from 286 a week ago. The province's dashboard shows 26 people in the ICU, down from 27 last Thursday.

In the week leading up to Nov. 5, 20 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,552.

That same week, 407 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by B.C. labs, down around 16 per cent from the week before.

Case totals are believed to be significant underestimates of the true spread of the disease because the centre only counts PCR tests in its report, which are currently inaccessible to the majority of British Columbians...

The number of COVID-19 cases in B.C. hospitals climbed by 13 per cent in the last week, as test positivity across the province ticked upward.

As of Nov. 17, there were 328 COVID cases in hospital, up from 290 the week prior, while the number of cases in critical care remained unchanged at 26, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

British Columbia hospitals are treating the same number of COVID-19-positive patients this week as they were last week, according to the latest update from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

The number of patients in critical care, however, has risen to its highest level since early August. There were 37 test-positive COVID-19 patients in critical care in B.C. Thursday, up from 26 last week. The overall number of patients stayed level at 328.

Current hospitalizations in B.C. reflect what the province calls a "hospital census" model. This means the reported numbers include both those with severe cases of COVID-19 requiring hospitalization and those who are admitted to hospital for other reasons and test positive incidentally...

369 hospitalizations recorded as of Friday, up by 12.5 per cent compared to last week

Overall COVID-19 hospitalizations and the number of patients in critical care have both increased since the B.C. Centre for Disease Control's last weekly report, with the latest numbers showing 41 more people in hospital with the disease.

It represents a 12.5 per cent increase over the last update on Nov. 24, which showed 328 people in hospital.

There is one more patient in critical care as of this week, for a total of 38, according to the province's COVID dashboard. The number is the highest ICU total since June 2, when 41 people were in critical care.

In the week leading up to Nov. 26, 26 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,680...

The number of people known to be in B.C. hospitals infected with COVID-19 is higher than it has been in more than four months – 374, up by 15 from one week ago.

The last time that the government reported a higher number of these people was on Aug. 11, when there were 398 COVID-19-positive people in B.C. hospitals.

B.C.'s count for COVID-19 hospital patients includes those who are in hospital for non-COVID-19 reasons, and who just happened to test positive for COVID-19.

The peak for COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. was on Jan. 31, when 1,048 such people were taking up hospital beds. The province changed its method of counting hospitalizations on Jan. 14, so only data after that date is comparable. The province has 11,582 total hospital beds, including what it calls surge beds, which can strain the system because they require additional resources.

Of those now positive for COVID-19 in B.C. hospitals, 31 are in intensive care units (ICUs). That figure is down by three from Dec. 8.

Severe infections have led to 27 additional COVID-19 deaths in the week up to Dec. 10, according to the province...

B.C. COVID-19 data: Weekly update shows drop in hospital population

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 in B.C. fell to its lowest level in weeks Thursday

There were 302 test-positive patients in hospitals across the province, the lowest total seen since Nov. 10, and a roughly 15-per-cent drop from the 356 recorded last week.

Weekly hospitalization totals released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control include both those who have serious cases of COVID-19 requiring medical treatment and those who are admitted to hospital for other reasons and test positive incidentally.

Health officials estimate that, at any given time, between 40 and 50 per cent of current COVID-related hospitalizations are caused by the disease, while the rest are incidental.

Since the province began counting hospitalizations using this "hospital census" model in January 2022, there have been as many as 985 and as few as 255 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in B.C. on Thursdays.

Since mid-August, however, the hospital census has not gone above 400, and it has only been below 300 for a brief, three-week span in late October and early November. A graph showing the trend in the weekly hospital census from January 2022 onward can be found at the end of this article...
