B.C. health officials announced 1,474 new cases of COVID-19 and six more deaths on Wednesday, a day after the province announced new restrictions which will come into effect tonight.

The restrictions — which include the cancellation of indoor events, the closure of bars, nightclubs, fitness studios as well as plans to cancel scheduled surgeries — are meant to curb the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

Wednesday's case numbers mark the highest one-day total for new cases to date for British Columbia. The number of new cases reported today is up 150 per cent from last Wednesday.

In a written statement, the provincial government said there are currently 7,253 active cases of people infected with the novel coronavirus in B.C.

Overall hospitalizations, which typically lag behind spikes and dips in new cases, are down by 3.1 per cent from last Wednesday, when 193 people were in hospital with the disease and about 44.5 per cent from a month ago when 337 people were in hospital.

The number of patients in intensive care is down by about 7.8 per cent from 77 a week ago and by 38.2 per cent from a month ago when 115 people were in the ICU.

The provincial death toll from COVID-19 is now 2,409 lives lost out of 231,117 confirmed cases to date...

Another daily case record has been broken in British Columbia, with nearly 3,000 people confirmed to have COVID-19 in the most recent 24-hour period.

The update was announced by the province's top doctor during a news conference Wednesday.

Dr. Bonnie Henry said 2,944 cases have been added to the provincial tally, a record based on data released so far by the province. However, numbers provided earlier this month were "preliminary," and final counts expected later in the day will confirm whether the latest numbers were higher than recorded over the weekend.

Active cases, a total not provided in the last two updates on the spread of the disease, are now at 16,014 – also a record in B.C.

The records come as B.C. struggles with its capacity for testing. Last week, provincial health officials changed the criteria for COVID-19 tests, as labs and testing centres were unable to keep up with demand...

...According to Henry, 193 patients in hospital are currently considered infectious, and 66 of those are being treated in critical care units.

Five people have died over the last five reporting periods of the novel coronavirus. The deaths bring the total since the start of the pandemic to 2,419 lives...
