Alberta reported 1,609 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 24 new deaths, the highest number of deaths reported in one day in the province's fourth wave.

For the third straight day, the province has set a new pandemic peak for COVID admissions to the ICU, with 218 people being treated in intensive care beds.

Province-wide, there are 877 people in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 55 from Tuesday's update. Of the 218 people in ICU, 92.3 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

The 1,609 new cases — among the highest the province has seen since early May — were detected on 15,831 tests with a positivity rate around 10.46 per cent.

Active cases rose Wednesday after taking a slight dip in Tuesday's update. There are now 18,421 active cases across the province, the most in Canada...

Alberta patients may be transferred to Ontario as hospitals bear down under COVID-19's fourth wave
Out-of-province transfer would be last resort, says Dr. Verna Yiu
CBC News · Posted: Sep 16, 2021 11:26 AM MT | Last Updated: 43 minutes ago

Alberta hospitals are being told to find non-intensive care beds that can be used for patients who are critically ill with COVID-19.

Some patients may even be transferred to Ontario, a move that would be a last resort.

"I cannot stress enough how serious the situation is in our hospitals," said Dr. Verna Yiu, president and CEO of Alberta Health Services, speaking during a Thursday news conference with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health..

AHS has moved to its highest level in terms of its surge response, she said, a step designed to add additional capacity using a variety of tools.

"We have asked our teams to identify and open any spaces that can be used as an ICU bed," she said.

"This includes spaces such as operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, observation spaces and recovery wards.

"This means that patients needing critical care may receive it in a space that is not usually used for ICU. We are taking measures to ensure this is safe, given the extraordinary circumstances."
        More than 1,700 new cases

Alberta has identified 1,718 new cases in the past 24 hours on 16,300 tests. The test positivity rate was 10.6 per cent. Alberta now has 18,706 active cases of COVID-19.

Hinshaw reported 10 new deaths from the disease.

There are 896 people in hospital, including 222 in intensive care.

Alberta declared a state of public health emergency on Wednesday amid rapidly escalating cases and hospitalization rates that could cause the province's hospitals to run out of staff and intensive care beds within the next 10 days.

On Wednesday, Premier Jason Kenney announced strict and sweeping new measures, including limits on social gatherings and strict regulations on businesses, workplaces and places of worship.

Kenney also announced a new proof-of-vaccination program. Starting Monday, Albertans will be required to provide proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test to enter businesses and attend social events...

Alberta asks Ottawa for immediate help to airlift COVID patients out of the province
Province has also formally requested additional critical care staff
Sarah Rieger · CBC News · Posted: Sep 21, 2021 4:30 PM MT | Last Updated: 6 minutes ago

Alberta's UCP government is asking Ottawa for immediate help to lessen pressure on the province's health-care system, which is overburdened with COVID-19 patients.

Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver formally requested aid and an immediate meeting with federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair in a Tuesday letter.

He asked for the federal government to provide aero-medical evacuation capability to relocate patients out of Alberta, and intensive care unit (ICU) registered nurses and respiratory therapists to assist in Alberta's critical care response.

"Federal assistance in these two areas has the potential to create significant relief to the health-care system," McIver wrote.

Alberta's ICU capacity is currently at 88 per cent, but without added surge beds — which health-care workers have said are not adequately staffed — the province would be at 170 per cent of its baseline capacity.

There are 294 ICU patients in the province, 216 of whom have COVID-19. There are nearly 1,000 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, and the province has identified more than 20,000 active cases.

Surgeries have been cancelled across the province to free up health-care workers to deal with the crisis...
