EDMONTON -- Alberta reported more than 2,000 COVID-19 cases for the first time in the pandemic and set a record for active cases on Thursday.

The province is also introducing targeted restrictions in regions with a case rate of 350 per 100,000 residents and a minimum of 250 active cases. Premier Jason Kenney said that includes Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Airdrie, Lethbridge and Strathcona County.

In these regions, junior and high schools students will shift to online learning starting Monday, and indoor fitness and team sports will be suspended, Kenney said.

The restrictions will remain in place for two weeks, even if a city drops below the 350-case rate threshold during that period. They will return to the provincewide restrictions after the two weeks.

Curfews could be enacted in regions with a case rate of 1,000 per 100,000 residents, if the municipality asks the "I hope that these measures, together with everything else that's been in place ? many of those rules for months, some of them for a year ? I hope that all of that will be sufficient," Kenney said. "If Albertans respond to this call for buckling down in the next few weeks, but if that's not the case, and if we continue to see current levels of case growth, then we will consider bringing forward additional restrictions.

"And I'll say something very clearly that I've not said before: At this point, I encourage people, if they can possibly do so, to stay home."

Thursday's 2,048 COVID-19 cases break Dec. 14's record of 1,887 infections, and 21,385 active cases break the record of 20,976 also set in mid-December.

Alberta also set an ICU record with 151 admissions, while a total of 632 people diagnosed with COVID-19 are in hospital...

TORONTO -- Alberta has become one of the hot spots for COVID-19 in Canada during this third wave of the pandemic.

The province broke its daily COVID-19 record for the third day in a row on Saturday when it reported 2,433 new infections. As of Sunday afternoon, Alberta?s test positivity rate hit 12 per cent, its highest since the pandemic started.

?What we're seeing right now is really uncontrolled viral growth,? Dr. Craig Jenne, infectious disease researcher and a Canada Research Chair at the University of Calgary, told CTV News Channel on Sunday.

?If Alberta was the size of Ontario, we'd be talking about over 8,000 cases in a single day,? Jenne said.

EDMONTON -- Within a week, all Albertans aged 12 and older will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.

The province was the first in Canada to announce Wednesday morning it was lowering the age of eligibility to teenaged residents.

Albertans born in 1991 or earlier will become eligible Thursday, May 6.

Then, booking will open Monday, May 10, to Albertans born between 1992 and 2009.

Health Canada cleared children 12 and older for the Pfizer vaccine earlier Wednesday morning.

?"This is a major milestone in our vaccine rollout, and it comes right when we need it most," Premier Jason Kenney said.

Alberta's opening up of age eligibility comes as the province tightens restrictions in an attempt to curb a fast-moving third wave of COVID-19 and variant infections. The premier announced during the Tuesday supper hour his province would move all schools online, close patio dining, limit outdoor gatherings to five people, and help law enforcement agencies work together better in addressing public health order repeat offenders.

He called the moves necessary to "prevent disaster from unfolding in our hospitals," and repeated the urgency on Wednesday.

According to the latest data, there are 671 Albertans in hospital with coronavirus, 150 of whom are in ICUs. In total, there are 226 Albertans in ICUs -- more than the system had room for before the pandemic. Alberta Health Services can increase the number of staffed ICU beds to 425, but not without reducing surgeries and other care services, which already have been reduced by 30 per cent in some health zones.

And, Alberta's active case count has been growing by an average of 1.8 per cent. If the trend were to continue, Alberta could see 30,000 active cases by the middle of May, and 40,000 active cases before June, according to government data.

"We have no tools left, no tools left to prevent a worst-case scenario in the health-care system apart from these additional measures that we've taken," Kenney told reporters...

Alberta reported 2,211 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday but no more deaths from the illness.

There are now 24,497 active cases across the province, the highest total since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Alberta continues to have the highest active-case rate in Canada.

"We don't yet know if we have hit the peak of new cases," Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said Thursday at a news conference.

The provincial R-value of 1.12 last week shows that cases are continuing to grow, Hinshaw said.

On Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney tightened public health restrictions in a bid to slow the spread.

Implementing those new measures was "critical," Hinshaw said, since the spread of the illness and the risk of being infected both remain extremely high...
