Alberta Health reported 36 more people were in hospitals receiving care for COVID-19 on Friday than there were on Thursday.

A total of 822 people were in hospital on Friday afternoon with the disease, with 81 of those people receiving care in the ICU.

The province also reported five additional deaths had been reported in the past 24 hours.

Two deaths took place in the Edmonton zone: a woman in her 80s with pre-existing conditions and a woman in her 90s with no pre-existing conditions.

There were two who died in the Calgary zone: a man in his 80s and a man in his 90s, both with pre-existing conditions.

The last death was a man in his 80s in the South zone. Alberta Health says he did not have any pre-existing conditions...

Alberta has made major changes to PCR testing criteria over the past weeks, limiting testing access to those living or working in high-risk areas. The average Albertan can no long receive a PCR test, meaning the total number of active COVID-19 cases in Alberta is believed to be much higher than the province is reporting.

Last week, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said a conservative estimate is that the province is catching one in 10 positive cases.

On Friday, the province reported an additional 6,163 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, another pandemic record for Alberta. There were a total of 64,129 confirmed active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta on Friday afternoon.

According to Hinshaw’s estimate, that means there are likely at least 640,000 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta...

Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping has tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home. It comes as the province surpassed 1,000 patients in hospital being treated for COVID-19...

...There are now 1,007 people in Alberta hospitals being treated for COVID-19, a jump from 822 patients in hospital on Friday. The last time Alberta had more than 1,000 people in hospital with COVID-19 was in mid-October.

The province released three days’ worth of COVID-19 data on Monday afternoon, which showed the spike in COVID-19-related hospitalizations.

ICU admissions also increased, but at a slower rate. There are now 94 people in Alberta ICUs with COVID-19, up from 81 patients on Friday.

An additional 23 deaths were reported to Alberta Health since Friday, bringing the province’s death toll to 3,403.

One of the deaths reported to Alberta Health in the last 72 hours was a child between the ages of five and nine. Alberta Health said the child died on Jan. 12 and the case did not involve pre-existing conditions. No further information about the child was released...

...When it comes to the number of new daily cases, Alberta identified a total of 15,886 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the last three days...

1,089 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 9 new deaths
104 patients with COVID in intensive care
CBC News · Posted: Jan 18, 2022 10:53 AM MT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Alberta reported 1,089 people are in hospital with COVID-19 Tuesday, 104 of them in the intensive care unit.

The province also reported nine new deaths, bringing the total number to 3,412 since the start of the pandemic.

The peak of the fourth wave in late September saw more than 1,100 people in hospital, including 250 in ICU.

At a news conference Tuesday, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Alberta Health Services is changing the way it reports the number of people admitted to hospital and intensive care with COVID-19.

AHS will now report the proportion of people admitted to hospitals because of COVID-19 as compared to those who are admitted because of other causes but still have the disease, Hinshaw said...

...Since late last week, 51 per cent of new admissions to non-ICU hospital beds are due to COVID-19 infection. In the remainder of cases, the infection was not determined to be a cause of admission, she said.

For ICU beds, the percentage of new admissions due to COVID-19 was 74 per cent. The remaining 26 per cent were incidental infections or unclear, she said.

"This is a different trend than what we have seen with previous variants and it is due to the much higher transmissibility of Omicron," Hinshaw said...

Alberta’s Omicron wave has peaked, but additional COVID-19 beds to open in Edmonton & Calgary: Kenney

Premier Jason Kenney said he believes Alberta has reached and surpassed the peak of the fifth wave of COVID-19.

“There are some hopeful signs but also need for caution,” Kenney said Thursday afternoon.

However, the premier also noted that while the infections may have peaked, hospitalizations are expected to continue to increase for the next several weeks. Kenney said there will likely be 1,500 or more COVID patients in non-ICU beds when Alberta reaches its hospitalization peak later this month.

There were 1,131 Albertans were in hospital with COVID-19 Thursday. Of those, 108 were being treated in intensive care.

“We are once again facing significant and increasing pressure on our health-care system,” Alberta Health Services CEO Dr. Verna Yiu said...

...Alberta reported an additional eight deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the province’s death toll to 3,421.

The province reported 3,527 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 from just over 11,000 tests. Confirmed active COVID-19 cases now sit at 64,519. However, due to limited access to PCR testing in Alberta, the number of new and active cases is likely much higher than what’s being reported on a daily basis.

When speaking about hitting the fifth wave’s peak, Kenney pointed to the province’s positivity rate, which has dropped from 41 per cent last week to about 33 per cent this week.

Kenney also said that there has been a decline in infection detected in 15 of the 19 communities where wastewater monitoring has been tracking levels of COVID-19.

While he said it’s still “early days,” the data is encouraging...

                        • On Jan. 17, Hinshaw said AHS will begin reporting the proportion of people admitted to hospitals because of COVID-19 as compared to those who are admitted because of other causes but still have the disease.

Alberta may be on verge of turning point in Omicron transmission, health minister says
'But make no mistake, the coming weeks are going to be the toughest yet'

Alberta is seeing early signs that the transmission of the Omicron variant may be slowing, Health Minister Jason Copping said Tuesday.

"It means, I hope, we are at a turning point in the current wave and we can start to see the end of it," Copping said at a news conference.

"But make no mistake, the coming weeks are going to be the toughest yet for many Albertans and for the people working in core inpatient units in our hospitals."

As in previous waves during the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital admissions will lag behind new cases so while cases seem to be going down, admissions to hospitals continue to rise, he said.

"Our hospitals are under strain, especially in the larger urban centres," he said. "Staff are tired, not just from the current wave of cases, but from five waves over two years.

"We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. But I also want to be clear that the health system is there for you if you need it and it is safe."

As of Tuesday's update, 1,377 people infected with COVID-19 were in Alberta hospitals, the highest total seen since the pandemic began in March 2020. There are 111 people in intensive care, three more than on Monday.

Thirteen new deaths were reported to Alberta Health over past 24 hours. There have now been 3,483 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The testing positivity rate is 42.8 per cent...
