MONTREAL — Quebec reported a record 9,397 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, as Montreal public health officials said contact tracers could no longer keep up with the surging number of daily infections.

Montreal public health director Dr. Mylene Drouin told reporters that 90 per cent of new COVID-19 cases in the city involve the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus and that one in five Montrealers getting tested is positive.

Drouin said there were more than 3,600 cases identified in the city on Wednesday, adding that the number is likely an underestimation given that testing sites are overwhelmed and results of take-home rapid tests aren’t being recorded. About sixty per cent of new infections in Montreal involve people between the ages of 18 and 44, she added...

...Quebec’s Health Department on Thursday also reported six more deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus. COVID-19-related hospitalizations rose by 28, to 473, and 91 people were in intensive care, a rise of three...

Quebec’s new restrictions take effect as the province records almost 8,000 new COVID-19 cases

New public health restrictions come into effect in Quebec Sunday as COVID-19 case counts soar in the province and across the country.

The province is capping private gatherings at six people or two family bubbles as of Boxing Day Sunday, after reporting more than 10,000 cases of the coronavirus on Christmas Eve and another 9,206 on Christmas Day.

Quebec reported about 8,000 cases on Boxing Day Sunday and three more virus-related deaths.

Officials have said the daily numbers are likely an underestimation because the province’s testing centres are overwhelmed and can’t keep up with demand.

Details on COVID-19-related hospitalizations and vaccinations will be released next week...

Increased cases among health workers in the province

            Sunday, December 26, 2021 10:31 PM
            UPDATE Sunday, December 26, 2021 10:31 PM

            ...
“It's very complicated in Quebec emergencies. It's not because we don't have a lot of people going to the emergency room that it's complicated, it's because we have a lot of people who are infected with COVID in the nursing and medical staff. », explains Dr. Simon-Pierre Landry, emergency doctor at Sainte-Agathe Hospital.
            ...
And the situation is only just beginning, says Dr Landry. "Every day there will be an increase in doctors and nurses who will have to be taken off work," he continues.

He gives as an example his department, where nearly 20% of doctors are in isolation.

“I have the impression that in Quebec we will be in the same situation since we have a staff shortage, which is worse than in the United States. There are going to be decisions that will be made over the next few days, ”says Dr. Landry.

He said the isolation period is currently 10 days, but several places around the world have decided to reduce this period to allow healthcare workers to return to work more quickly.

The best way to combat this problem, he says, is to speed up the third dose of the COVID vaccine to healthcare workers.

The new cases reported on Thursday bring the seven-day average of daily cases to 10,787. The trend is therefore up 106%.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID has doubled in a week. A total of 939 people are hospitalized as a result of COVID-19. Of these, 138 patients are in intensive care, 16 more than the day before.

The nine additional deaths bring the daily average to eight. This is double from last week.

At 5 p.m., Premier François Legault and Minister of Health Christian Dubé will hold a press conference to take stock of the spread of the virus in the province.

According to information obtained by La Presse , the Prime Minister should announce the return of the curfew, starting this Friday, for a period of three weeks. This measure should be in effect from 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Quebec is also considering announcing the closure of restaurants. Non-essential businesses would not have to close their doors, however. Their capacity has already been reduced to 50% since last week.

François Legault would also ask Quebecers not to gather with people outside their family bubble. The return to class would also be postponed to January 17 in all school levels.

Ontario health officials are reporting a record-breaking number of new COVID-19 cases with 16,713 infections logged as new testing guidelines for the public take effect.

Friday’s data comes after the province posted 13,807 new cases on Friday and 10,436 new cases on Thursday -- both records at the time.

The seven-day average for the number of cases reported in the province stands at 11,348. For context, that number was 4,922 this time last week. Two weeks ago, it was 1,914.

As well, 15 deaths related to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours -- the highest total reported in months -- pushing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 10,194.

Of the cases reported today, 13,436 infections were found in those who are fully vaccinated, 2,278 were in unvaccinated individuals, and 647 were in those who are partially vaccinated. The vaccination status of the remaining 352 cases is unknown.

With 75,093 tests processed in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said that Ontario’s positivity rate is currently 29.8 per cent...

... In the absence of testing being readily available to most of the public -- which some experts argue will present an unclear picture of how the virus is spreading -- Moore said that hospitalizations due to COVID-19 will continue to be a key indicator of how the highly-transmissible Omicron variant is affecting Ontario's health-care system.

Right now, of the 1,144 patients in hospital -- up 179 over yesterday’s total -- 536 patients are fully vaccinated, 236 are unvaccinated, and 42 are partially vaccinated. No vaccination information was provided for the remaining patients.

There are 205 patients in the ICU with COVID -- up five in the last 24 hours -- including 89 unvaccinated patients, 47 fully vaccinated patients, and seven partially vaccinated patients. No other vaccination information was released.

On Wednesday, a government official said that the province is working to change how it reports hospitalization data to reflect those who are admitted because of COVID-19 versus those who are admitted for another reason and test positive for the virus after the fact...
