Quebec adds 2 new COVID-19 deaths as hospitalizations drop by 9
      By Kalina Laframboise Global News
      Posted March 23, 2022 11:09 am

Quebec reported two new deaths attributed to COVID-19 as the province saw a slight dip in hospital numbers Wednesday.

Pandemic-related hospitalizations stood at 1,034, a nine-patient drop compared with the previous day. This comes after 99 people were admitted while 108 were discharged.

Officials say 50 patients were in intensive care, an increase of four.

The province recorded 2,111 new novel coronavirus cases, but the daily tally isn’t reflective of the situation since only certain high-risk groups have access to PCR screening.

Health authorities say 16,251 tests were administered at government-run sites on Monday, the most recent day for which that information is available...

Quebec registered 14 new deaths linked to COVID-19 as the province saw a 28-patient increase Thursday.

Pandemic-related hospitalizations came to a total of 1,062, after 127 patients were admitted and 99 were discharged in the last day.

Intensive care unit cases were also on the upswing with 57 Quebecers being treated for the disease, a rise of seven.

The province recorded 2,295 new cases of the novel coronavirus, but this is only a partial portrait of the situation since access remains limited to PCR testing...

Quebec is reporting 12 additional COVID-related deaths on Friday as officials warn of a possible sixth wave as cases continue to climb across the province.

Health officials say 1,048 people were hospitalized for the virus on Friday after 107 patients checked out of the hospital and 93 patients were admitted in the last 24 hours.

ICU cases went up by two after 10 people entered and eight patients left the unit.

Provincial data shows 2,203 PCR tests came back positive during the last day, which is only a small portrait of the situation as access to PCR testing remains limited to high priority groups...

COVID-19: Quebec’s hospitalizations rise again as province reports 1 new death

Quebec reported one new death attributed to COVID-19 as the province continued to see an uptick in patients being treated for disease Monday.

Pandemic-related hospitalizations came to 1,115, a rise of 27 compared with the previous day. In that time, 92 patients were admitted while 65 left.

The health department says 53 people were in intensive care units. That is a decrease of three in the last 24 hours.

The province’s daily roundup included 1,614 new novel coronavirus cases, but it only represents a partial picture of the situation since PCR screening is limited to high-risk groups.

On that note, 11,964 tests were administered at government-run sites on Saturday, the most recent day for that data is available.

Officials say the results of 1,292 additional rapid tests were also declared by Quebecers. Of those, 1,085 were positive for the virus...

Sharp increase in cases among health workers

                    [Home] [Society] [Health]
                    Jean-Louis Bordeleau
                    March 28, 2022
                    Health

Quebec must prepare to once again face the unforeseen events of the pandemic. Infections are on the rise again, and the number of contaminations could reach "half of what we saw in January," the acting national director of public health, Dr. Luc Boileau, estimated on Sunday. Already, 8,600 healthcare workers have to be absent from their workplace, a 60% increase in one week.

The situation has changed a lot in recent days,” Dr. Boileau dropped right off the bat during an exceptional press conference. Quebec recorded 107 new hospitalizations on Saturday, reversing a trend that had held for nine weeks. “If the current trend continues, the number of hospitalizations will continue to increase. »

This resurgence was "expected", he recalled, due to the lifting of sanitary measures, but "the addition of [sub-variant] BA.2 on top surprised" the experts. If these two factors are combined, this latest surge in contamination could reach “half of what we experienced in January”, according to scientific consensus. About two-thirds of the infections recorded in Quebec already come from the BA.2 subvariant, said the acting national director of public health.

This new strain is so contagious that each infected person infects 10 others on average, notes Dr. Hélène Carabin, associate epidemiologist at the University of Montreal. This average was 8 with Omicron, and 2 to 3 for the original virus. "Vaccination alone will not be able to completely stop the spread of the virus," she warns.

Consequence: not only is the number of patients suffering from COVID-19 increasing, but the number of infected hospital staff is increasing as well. As of Sunday, about 8,600 health care workers had to be absent, most of them due to infection, which represents a 60% increase in one week. “There is a strong push at this level,” summed up Dr. Luc Boileau.

This weakening of the capacity to provide care in Quebec is of particular concern to authorities in regions where the number of employees is generally lower, such as Gaspésie, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean or Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

The spread of COVID-19 is stronger in these regions than in Montreal, because they were less affected by the fifth wave, points out to Le Devoir Dr. Maryse Guay, public health specialist at the Direction de la santé publique of the Monteregie. “These regions are getting caught up in the virus,” she says.

                    The lessons of Europe

“No question” however of reintroducing new so-called “population-based” health measures, said Dr. Boileau.

This laissez-faire attitude receives the approval of all the experts consulted by Le Devoir . “I believe that the government had no choice but to let society reopen a little, otherwise adherence [to the rules] would have been more complex and difficult”, underlines virologist Benoit Barbeau.

Leaving it to others to call the situation a “sixth wave,” Dr. Boileau nevertheless urged the public to be extra careful.

Hand washing, wearing a mask, physical distance and isolation for infected people remain in order. “After five days of isolation, we can, yes, get out of our isolation, but making sure to overprotect others, advised Dr. Boileau. […] Contagion is ten days! »

He refrained from estimating the duration of this new wave, for lack of conclusive data. “Systematically, the trends that we see in Europe, we see them a few weeks later here,” observes Dr. Carabin on the other hand .

Indeed, no less than 18 of the 53 European countries under WHO surveillance are currently experiencing a resurgence of the virus.

We are always able to get through it, but the problem is the people who still have to wait for their surgery, their cancer treatment, etc. They suffer longer, they don't get the care they deserve, and that's the problem.

                    —Maryse Guay

The rise in hospitalizations has continued unabated for two weeks in France and Italy, while it has lasted for three weeks in England, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the latter country, however, the peak of hospitalizations seems to have been exceeded for a few days.

The higher vaccination rate on this side of the ocean coupled with the extent of the immunity acquired with Omicron should allow Quebec to get through this new wave more easily, specify the various experts. “We are always able to get through it, but the problem is the people who still have to wait for their surgery, their cancer treatment, etc. They suffer longer, they don't receive the care they deserve, and that's the problem,” emphasizes Dr. Guay.

                    Infections in parliament

The virus notably sneaked inside the walls of the parliament in Quebec. Prime Minister François Legault tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. Transport Minister François Bonnardel announced on Sunday that he had contracted the virus. Deputy Prime Minister Geneviève Guilbault also placed herself in isolation after her daughter tested positive.

During his press briefing, Dr. Luc Boileau placed the responsibility for the contagion in the hands of individuals. “Each person must act responsibly, for themselves and for others,” he said.

“If you want to take risks, don't take risks with vulnerable people. Don't go see your grandparents after seeing a lot of people the previous days,” recommends Dr. Carabin in turn .

La hausse actuelle d’infections à la COVID-19 pourrait atteindre «la moitié de ce qu’on a connu en janvier».
"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
                    -Nelson Mandela

Quebec recorded 20 new deaths attributed to COVID-19 and a 38-patient increase Tuesday.

The number of people hospitalized with the disease came to a total of 1,153. This comes after 135 patients were admitted in the last day while 97 left.

Of pandemic-related hospitalizations, 63 are Quebecers in intensive care units. This is a rise of 10 in the past 24-hour stretch.

The province reported 2,171 new cases of the novel coronavirus, but this is only a partial picture of the current situation since PCR screening is limited to certain groups.

Health authorities say 13,139 tests were administered at government-run sites Sunday, the most recent day for which that information is available...

Quebec recorded eight new deaths related to COVID-19 as hospitalizations jumped Wednesday.

The number of hospitalizations rounded out at 1,200, a rise of 47. This comes after 148 patients were admitted, while 101 left in the last day.

Officials say 60 people were being treated for the disease in intensive care units, a drop of three.

The province’s daily tally included 3,067 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, though this isn’t representative of the situation since PCR testing is only open to select groups.

On that note, 20,475 tests were administered at government-run screening sites on Monday.

Quebecers continued to register the results of their rapid tests, adding 1,560 in the latest update. Of those tests, 1,334 were positive for the virus...

As Quebec enters a sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the province reported 12 new deaths and an uptick in hospital numbers Thursday.

Hospitalizations related to the disease stood at 1,238, an increase of 38. In the last day, 151 people were admitted while 113 were discharged.

The number of intensive care unit cases was also on the rise with six more patients, for a total of 66.

The province logged 3,319 new novel coronavirus infections. This only paints a partial portrait since PCR screening is only open to a few groups, including health-care workers and teachers.

Health authorities say 19,860 tests were given at government-run sites on Tuesday. It is the latest day for which that information is available.

Quebecers also continued to register the results of their rapid tests on the province’s online portal. Another 1,881 were declared, including 1,601 positive results...
