Quebec records more than 130 new COVID-19 cases for second day in a row
By Alessia Simona Maratta Global News
    Posted July 29, 2021 11:24 am

Quebec recorded 138 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the most daily cases since mid June, and no additional virus-related deaths.

This is the second day in a row that the province reports more than 130 new cases as Health Minister Christian Dubé warned Quebecers of rising cases yesterday, saying its up to everyone to hurry up and get their second dose.

Hospitalizations stand at 62, an increase of one from Wednesday. Of those, 20 patients are in the intensive care — an increase of one from the day before.

As for vaccinations, 71,186 more doses were administered for a total of 10.9 million shots doled out in Quebec since the start of the pandemic.

The province’s public health institute said Wednesday that among Quebecers aged 12 and older, 83.7 per cent have received a first dose of vaccine and 64.2 per cent are considered adequately vaccinated — meaning they have had either two doses or one dose after recovering from COVID-19...

Analysis: Quebec is at the beginning of a Delta wave, experts warn
"We do have community transmission" of the ultra-contagious variant, said Dr. Judith Fafard

Quebec is now at the beginning of a wave of Delta cases, with the ultra-contagious variant projected to become predominant in the province by the end of August, says a top official with the provincial public health laboratory.

Although the Alpha variant is still the predominant strain in Quebec, it’s beginning to lose ground to Delta. In April, more than 73 per cent of COVID-19 cases screened positive for Alpha, but by July 18 that percentage dropped to 49.2, according to the latest figures by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec.

“We believe the Delta variant will become predominant before the end of August,” Dr. Judith Fafard, a microbiologist and infectious-diseases specialist, told the Montreal Gazette on Wednesday.

“The number of Delta cases under investigation increased dramatically since last week, by more than 31 per cent. We presume that within that 31 per cent, there is probably a big proportion that are really Delta.”...

                            • Delta variant 'really progressing' in Montreal: public health official

                              ...

The Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is “really progressing” in Montreal and has contributed to the increase in diagnosed cases, according to one of the city’s top public health officials.
                              ...
“For the last few weeks, we’ve been seeing the number of cases increase in Montreal. It seems to have been getting a little faster over the last week. Over the last few days, we’ve also seen what appears to be the number of hospitalizations go up, and that’s a worrisome sign if that continues,” Kaiser said.
                              ...
In recent weeks, Kaiser said, one-third of cases in Montreal have come from travellers who arrived from outside of Canada.

“That is significant because that is (the source from) where we are seeing many of our Delta variant cases. Among them, a lot (of the travellers) were double-vaccinated, so they were not required to isolate. That is one prudent message: When we are double-vaccinated, we can still transmit (the virus),” Kaiser said, calling on Montrealers to avoid potential super-spreader events like large indoor gatherings.

The city’s recent hotspots have not involved the usual sources like workplaces. It is a sign, Kaiser said, of how COVID-19 has been spread recently by people who are double-vaccinated and assumed they are safe.

Quebec is reporting more than 400 new COVID-19 cases for the first time since the end of May.

The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux has added 409 new coronavirus cases to the provincial total over the past 24 hours, Quebec’s highest daily increase since May 23 when 433 new cases were announced.

Zero new virus-related death has been added to the provincial total in the past 24 hours but one was added over the weekend. Public health says the province’s death tally remains at 11,242 due to a previously added death being removed from earlier this summer.

In June, the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux stopped reported daily COVID-19 updates on weekends and holidays.
