The last three days have seen 46 people die of COVID-19 in B.C., as more than 2,000 new cases of the disease were confirmed, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Monday.

A total of 2,364 cases from over the weekend were added to the province's total to date, which includes 277 historical cases that were previously missed because of a data reporting error in the Fraser Health region.

There's now a record number of 316 patients in hospital with the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, including 75 in critical care, out of 8,855 active cases — also the highest total to date.

Henry noted that this weekend's death toll is "the highest number we have ever had" as she paid an emotional tribute to those who have been lost and the family and friends they've left behind.

"We all feel your loss and we mourn with you," she said...

Another 12 lives have been lost to COVID-19 in B.C. as Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 694 new cases of the disease Thursday.

The number of active cases across the province has risen to 9,103, but the number of patients in hospital has dipped slightly to 325, with 80 in critical condition.

Henry used Thursday's briefing to urge everyone to stay strong and follow public health orders that have banned social gatherings and community events.

"The reason why we need to reduce social interactions, the reason why we cancelled events, the reason why we put in restrictions on adult team sports — what we have seen is when people come together, this virus can spread," she said...

B.C.'s provincial health officer extended the ban on social gatherings for another month on Monday, as the province recorded 35 more deaths related to COVID-19 and 2,020 new cases over the weekend.

Residents will continue to only be able to socialize with people in their household until Jan. 8 at midnight, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced.

All events and gatherings are also banned until that time, with the exception of drive-thru and drop-off events, such as toy drives and light shows.

Other restrictions will continue indefinitely, including a ban on in-person faith services and high-intensity group fitness classes.

Henry said the restrictions put in place earlier this month are starting to work, but the province can't afford a rebound of cases and a resulting surge in hospitalizations.

"We are not yet through this storm and we can not let up now," she said.

The latest reporting period spanned three days and included: 647 cases between Friday and Saturday, 726 cases between Saturday and Sunday, and 647 cases between Sunday and Monday.

The province has 9,380 active cases. A total of 349 people are in hospital, with 77 people in intensive care.
