During a Tuesday news conference, Quebec Premier Fran?ois Legault urged residents to avoid private gatherings "as much as possible" after saying the majority of new coronavirus cases are from community transmissions between friends and families. Quebec announced a total of eight regions in the province are now in the yellow zone, which will mean more police intervention, targeted screening, and more inspections.

The alert levels for the Montreal, Mont?r?gie, Chaudi?re-Appalaches and Bas-Saint-Laurent regions have been raised amid an upward trend of novel coronavirus cases.

Quebec Premier Fran?ois Legault announced the update Tuesday, saying a total of eight regions in the province are now in the yellow zone, which calls for an early warning.

As a result, Legault is asking citizens to limit their private gatherings as much as possible to stem the tide of COVID-19.

“The situation is critical and worrisome,” he said. “And we have to react now. It’s the responsibility of each Quebecer.”

Legault said he is worried for children and that the province cannot close schools, where 377 infections have been reported to date. The uptick in cases could also overwhelm hospitals, he added.

“Right now we have a health-care system that is very fragile,” said Quebec Health Minister Christian Dub?....

MONTREAL -- Quebec's public health authorities will hold a rare news conference Sunday night and everything suggests the Montreal, Quebec City and Chaudiere-Appalaches regions will go from yellow (early warning) level to orange (alert) level as COVID-19 cases spike in the three regions.

A well-placed source has told CTV News that the Legault government is giving itself a few hours to finalize the decision, but that it is likely.

Quebec public health authorities announced Sunday that there were 160 new COVID-19 cases on the Island of Montreal in the past 24 hours (31,309 total), 92 more in Quebec City (2,969 total) and 19 more in Chaudiere-Appalaches (907 total).

Quebec COVID-19 numbers continue to surge with 462 new cases reported

MONTREAL -- With 586 new cases of COVID-19 and ten more hospitalizations reported on Monday, Quebec's public health minister issued a stern warning.

Dr. Horacio Arruda urged Quebecers to be cautious, follow COVID-19 guidelines and limit gatherings to six people, saying some regions currently classified as "orange zones" under the province's regional alert system, could turn to "red" if people don't exercise vigilance.

New cases surged on Monday by more than 100 from the day before, when 462 new cases were reported.

The provincial total now stands at 68,128 cases of COVID-19.

Montreal reported 219 new cases for a total of 31,528, while the Quebec City region reported 92 cases for a total of 3,061 and the Monteregie reached a total of 10,014 after reporting 76 new cases.

It is very likely that regions including Montreal, Quebec City, Mauricie and Beauce-Appalaches will eventually head into the "red zone" if the current behaviour of citizens remains the same, said Arruda.

The public health director specified that cases will continue to rise if the number of gatherings continues without respecting the distancing...

Quebec announces new COVID-19 restrictions starting Thursday as 3 regions put on red alert
Premier Fran?ois Legault says it's with a 'heavy heart' that he's announcing strict measures

Quebec Premier Fran?ois Legault says three regions are being moved to the highest COVID-19 alert level, and stricter health measures are now necessary to curb the rate of transmission.

Those regions include Montreal, Quebec City and Chaudi?re-Appalaches, south of the provincial capital.

"We looked at the results over the weekend and the number of cases has gone up significantly," the premier said Monday during a late afternoon news conference.

"We need to make some difficult decisions."

This rise in cases could lead to an increase of hospitalizations and deaths, he said, and the government must act quickly in the interest of all Quebecers.

The entire Montreal metropolitan area will be in the red zone, including heavily populated cities like Laval and Longueuil as the zone stretches into the surrounding regions.

The following new measures will take effect as of midnight Wednesday into Thursday in the three regions:

Ban on home gatherings, with some exceptions such as a single caregiver allowed per visit.

All bars, casinos and restaurants are closed (takeout only).

Libraries, museums, cinemas and theatres will also be closed.

Being less than two metres apart will be prohibited. Masks will be mandatory during demonstrations.

Houses of worship and venues for events like funerals and weddings will have a 25-person limit.

Hair salons, hotels and other such businesses will stay open.

                    Schools will remain open.

"Schools must remain open," Legault said. "Businesses are open so parents can continue to work and earn money."...
