Influenza death toll rises to 28 since July in Taiwan

Influenza claimed two more lives last week in Taiwan, bringing the number of flu-related deaths to 12, the island's disease control authority said on Tuesday.
During November 6-12, 30 new cases of severe complications related to influenza were confirmed, the Centers for Disease Control said in a statement on its website.
Since July, there have been 117 severe flu cases.
The two people who died both contracted H3N2 virus and most of the patients had not received flu vaccination.
The agency noted vaccination is the most effective way to prevent flu, urging high-risk groups such as seniors, infants and chronically ill patients to get their shots as soon as possible

CDC confirms two deaths, 30 serious flu complications

...A 57-year-old man with stage four cancer and viral hepatitis passed away five days after he began to experience difficulty breathing on Nov. 1, and an 81-year-old woman who was vaccinated against the flu early last month, but began to suffer from a high fever, difficulty breathing and other symptoms on Nov.1 died on Nov. 4, CDC physician Lin Yung-ching (林詠青) said.

The elderly woman is the first person to have been vaccinated who has died this flu season, he said.

Among the 117 confirmed cases of serious flu complications, 79 percent were of influenza A (H3N2), 10 percent with influenza B, 8 percent had influenza A of an unknown subtype, and 3 percent had influenza A (H1N1), Lin said...

19 die from flu in Taiwan since July: CDC

Taipei, Dec. 9 (CNA) Taiwan has recorded 194 cases of severe flu with complications since July, 19 of which resulted in deaths, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday.

Of the 194 patients, 133 were 65 or older; 43 were in the 50-64 age group; 10 were in the 25-49 age group; six were aged between 7 and 18; and two were aged between 3 and 6, the CDC said.

During the same period last year, there were 160 cases of severe flu with complications, including 31 that were fatal, according to the CDC...

Influenza death toll rises to 28 this flu season: CDC

Taipei, Dec. 27 (CNA) A 66-year-old man in southern Taiwan died of complications from severe flu last week, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed Tuesday, bringing the total number of people who have died this flu season in Taiwan to 28.

CDC physician Lin Yung-ching (林詠青) said the patient, who had a history of chronic conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and heart murmurs, developed flu symptoms in early November.

He was rushed to a local hospital for emergency care after developing complications five days later.

According to CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Director Liu Ting-ping (劉定萍), there were 10 new cases of severe flu with complications last week, and all of the patients have histories of chronic illnesses.

Nine of them were over the age of 50, and eight were diagnosed to be infected with the H3N2 strain of the virus, Liu added.
