The Sri Lankan office of the World Health Organization (WHO) has provided Rs.50 million worth drugs (Oceltamivir capsules) for use in case Swine Flu ((A) H1N1) breaks out in the country. The consignment of drugs is sufficient to treat 7,000 patients. A few Asian countries have been affected by Swine Flu, a Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.
He also said WHO Representative Dr.Firdois Rustam Mehtha handed over the consignment of drugs to the Medical Supply Division (MSD) of the Ministry on Thursday. Oceltamivir is required for treatment before and after the infection. The brand name of the drug is Tamiflu and its generic name is Oseltamivir.
The consignment of Oceltamivir expires in March 2011 and it should be stored between 15C and 25C. The MSD has made arrangements to store this drug under the required temperature.
Thus Sri Lanka has adequate drugs and medical equipment to face Swine Flu outbreak.
Earlier, the WHO provided 15,000 capsules for the use of adults, 240 bottles of syrup for children and 2,000 N 95 masks. One capsule costs Rs.300 and one bottle of syrup Rs. 275. The cost of one mask is Rs.135. WHO provided drugs responding to a request by Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
