SEOUL, May 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean health authorities confirmed Saturday that a United States resident in the country has been infected with the new type-A influenza virus.

The 23-year-old American woman, who entered South Korea earlier this month to work as an English teacher, has been confirmed as the fifth case of the new virus in the country, Seoul's health ministry said.

The South Korean government has confirmed four cases of the new virus previously, including three Koreans and one Vietnamese traveler.http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/nati...00400315F.HTML

SEOUL, May 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korean health authorities confirmed Saturday that a South Korean woman living together with the fifth confirmed case has been infected with the new type-A influenza virus, as the sixth case in the nation.

The 26-year-old woman resides in the same building as an American English teacher who was confirmed to be infected with the virus Saturday morning, said the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health authorities said they are working on tracking down about 70 individuals who came into contact with the American woman since she arrived in the country on May 16.

Out of the 70, seven including the newly confirm case have been quarantined after showing apparent flu-like symptoms. Four have been classified as possibly being infected with type-A/H1N1 influenza and have been moved to a hospital in Seoul, while two others have already tested negative, the authorities said.

The center said test results for the four possible patients will be disclosed on Sunday.

The South Korean government has now confirmed six cases of the new virus -- four Koreans, one Vietnamese traveler and one American. Three South Koreans have all recovered from the disease after being treated with antiviral medication.

Since the outbreak of the new flu virus was first reported in Mexico last month, Seoul has been stepping up efforts to stem the spread of the disease by intensifying monitoring of inbound travelers.

SEOUL : South Korea on Sunday reported another 11 confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) flu infection, bringing the total to 21 in the country amid fears of the disease spreading fast, Yonhap news agency said.

The new cases of A (H1N1) influenza infection were found in three children who arrived here from New York early Sunday, and eight foreigners who had trained together to work as English teachers along with a US infected patient, Yonhap said, citing health authorities.

Yonhap said some of the foreigners had been sent to language institutes in different cities nationwide before being quarantined, sparking health concerns.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which had earlier quarantined the three children as probable cases, refused to confirm the news report, saying the final results were due on Monday.

Seoul's health ministry had previously confirmed 10 cases of H1N1 flu infection. - AFP/ms

More H1N1 infections found in students from abroad

Six more Koreans that had traveled in the United States have contracted the H1N1 flu virus, health officials said yesterday.

The number of people infected with the disease in Korea has reached 67 as of yesterday.

While they were at a state-run isolation hospital for treatment and observation, health officials quarantined their family members in their homes during the virus' seven-day incubation period. No transmission has been found among other family members so far.

Along with checking passengers onboard the same flights with the confirmed patients, health officials asked other travelers to report to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at (02) 157-1610. The airplanes include NW095 from Detroit to Incheon on June 13, NW085 from New York to Gimhae on June 9 and KE024 from San Francisco to Incheon on June 10.

Considering the possible influx of Korean and foreign students from abroad during the summer season, health officials had met to offer precautionary measures to officials of local universities. They agreed to install thermal imaging equipment at the universities; health centers.

Health officials also warned that international events scheduled in the coming months are cause for concern.

"In preparation for the possible entry of the virus throug some international events, we are stepping up efforts to educate participants on the disease and precautionary measures against it," said Jun Byung-yool, a senior official of the Korean disease control center.

An Australian lacrosse player staying at an isolation hospital after testing positive for the virus is recovering, according to health officials. The 19 year old entered the country along with his Australian lacrosse team to participate in an international tournament in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province from June 8-21.

After his infection was confirmed, the other 25 team members, as well as the player's mother were also under quarantine at a facility in Suwon.

They will be allowed to return to their home country when no symptoms are found during the seven-day incubation period, health officials said.

"The Australian team, including the confirmed patient, could not participate in the tournament because they were quarantined beforehand," a health official said. "Despite the coach's request that they be able to attend the last few games, we decided to stick to our principle that mandates isolation due to possible infection for at least seven days."

SNU Medical Doctor Infected With New Flu
A medical doctor working for a South Korean hospital has been confirmed to have been infected with Influenza A, hospital officials said Tuesday.

The Seoul National University Hospital said one of its staff, 33, has been under close observation for treatment after she tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

She showed flu-like symptoms after returning from a recent trip to the United States to attend an academic conference on gastrointestinal disorders, according to Yonhap News Agency. She voluntarily asked for a medical checkup on June 10 and has been placed under observation since Monday.

The latest case has been reported to the nation's health authorities for confirmation, hospital officials said.

The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs said it is conducting tests on samples from the patient and the final results might be available later in the day.

It would mark the first time that a medical worker has been infected with the contagious disease in South Korea. South Korea has confirmed a total of 67 cases of the new flu.

                            H1N1 cases exceed 100

The total number of people infected with the H1N1 flu virus here passed the one hundred mark on Saturday, 50 days after the nation's first case was announced on May 2.

According to the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, 115 people have contracted the virus in Korea, with 10 additional cases found yesterday.

Along with five separate cases - including four Americans and one Korean traveling from the United States - another five people were infected with the disease after having been in close contact with confirmed patients.

Two females are believed to have fall sick after being infected through a company colleague, who was found to have the virus on Saturday.

Three people were also confirmed to be infected with the disease through their friend, a 19-year-old Korean student who recently returned from the United States and tested positive for the virus on June 18.

All of them were place in a state-run isolation hospital for treatment and observation.

Health officials are tracking down passengers onboard the same flights, along with those confirmed patients and others who might have been in close contact with them.

Health officials said the number of confirmed patients will continue to increase in the coming months as students from abroad and vacationers who travel to other countries return Korea.
