Latest 2 H1N1 patients admitted to ICU sought treatment late

SINGAPORE: Two patients who waited too long to seek treatment are the latest to be infected with H1N1 and put in intensive care.

They're patients with underlying conditions and who waited days before they sought treatment even though they had a fever.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said a 55-year-old man with motor neuron disease sought treatment on July 18 after two days of fever and shortness of breath.

He suffered a heart attack at Changi General Hospital's Emergency Department.

That day, a 42-year-old woman with hypertension and thyroid disease also turned up, after suffering five days of fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath.

Separately, the three other patients still in intensive care at Singapore General Hospital are in stable condition.

A total of 64 patients are in public hospitals for H1N1.

The Health Ministry urged those in high risk groups to seek early treatment if they develop flu-like symptoms.

Three more patients who are confirmed to have the Influenza A(H1N1) virus have been admitted to the ICU, according to a press statement by the Ministry of Health.

These are:

A 46-year-old female foreigner with hypertension and kidney disease on dialysis sought medical treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's Emergency Department on July 19 with a 7-day history of sore throat and fever. She was admitted and transferred to the hospital's ICU on July 20 when she became breathless. Laboratory tests confirmed that she is positive for Influenza A (H1N1-2009). She is currently in a stable condition.

A 51-year-old female with asthma sought treatment at TTSH's emergency department on July 20 with a 2-day history of fever and 1-day history of breathlessness. She was admitted to ICU on the same day as her condition had worsened. Laboratory tests confirmed that she is positive for Influenza A (H1N1-2009). She is currently in a critical condition.

A 13-year-old male suffering from epilepsy sought medical treatment at NUH's emergency department on July 19 after a day of fever and cough.' He suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest at the emergency department and was admitted to NUH's Paediatric ICU. Laboratory tests confirmed that he has Influenza A (H1N1-2009) on 20 Jul 09.' He is currently in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, the 55-year-old man suffering from motor neuron disease and the 42-year-old woman with co-morbidities (hypertension, thyroid disease) admitted to CGH's ICU on July 18 remain in critical condition. (THESE TWO PEOPLE LATER DIED)

Thanks to Singapore for sharing patient information.

Hopefully, publicizing the fact that the 46F waited for 7 days with fever and sore throat before seeking help and now she's in ICU will send a clear message - don't ignore symptoms if you have underlying conditions.

A 61 year old Chinese man and a 14 year old Indian boy are the latest H1N1 case to be admitted to intensive care unit.

Singapore Ministry of Health annouced that they have two more admissions to ICU today. The first is a 61-year-old Chinese man with a medical history of ischaemic heart disease. He was admitted to SGH's isolation ward on 23 July after one week of cough, sore throat and running nose. He was transferred to the ICU because of breathlessness. Laboratory tests confirmed he has Influenza A (H1N1-2009). He is currently on a ventilator and in a critical condition.

The 2nd patient is a 14-year-old Indian boy with a medical history of asthma and epilepsy. He was admitted to NUH's isolation ward on 24 July after having fever for two days followed by three episodes of seizures and was later transferred to ICU. Laboratory tests confirmed he has Influenza A (H1N1-2009). He is currently on a ventilator and in a critical condition.

SINGAPORE: Two more patients have been admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) with complications arising from the H1N1 flu.

The first is a 45-year-old woman with a history of neuromuscular disease. She went to the National University Hospital's Emergency Department on Monday with breathing difficulties and a four-day history of fever.

She was later diagnosed with severe pneumonia and respiratory failure and is now on ventilator support.

The second patient is a 25-year-old woman with a history of asthma. She sought treatment at Tan Tock Seng Hospital on Tuesday. She had a three-day history of shortness of breath, cough and sore throat.

Laboratory tests confirmed both patients have Influenza A(H1N1).

There are now more than 100 people hospitalised in Singapore for the H1N1 flu, and about 10 are in the ICUs.

Five people in Singapore have died from complications related to the H1N1 flu.

Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) announced today two more new cases of H1N1 in Intensive case unit (ICU) today.


Case 1

The first is a 45-year-old Chinese female with a history of myasthenia gravis (a neuromuscular disease). On 27th July, she went to NUH Emergency Department as she had difficulty in breathing and a 4-day history of fever. She was admitted directly to ICU with a diagnosis of severe pneumonia and respiratory failure. Laboratory tests confirmed she has Influenza A (H1N1-2009). She is now on ventilator support and is critically ill.

Case 2

The patient is a 25-year-old Chinese female with a history of asthma. On 28th July, she sought treatment at TTSH Emergency Department. She had a 3-day history of shortness of breath, cough and sore throat, and was subsequently transferred to ICU for closer monitoring. Laboratory tests confirmed she has Influenza A (H1N1-2009).
