  • Philippines. DOH warns vs spread of AH1N1

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health warned school officials against the possible spread of the H1N1 virus as the flu season approaches.

The reminder also comes as students who spent their summer vacation abroad are expected to return home in time for the resumption of classes.

The DOH wants school officials to strictly monitor and track cases of fever among students.

Meantime, the DOH is prioritizing health workers over students in giving H1N1 vaccines.

School officials will also conduct inspections in campuses across the country from May 24 to 28 to determine the preparedness of schools in preventing the H1N1 virus.

The H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, is another form of the flu virus.

The World Health Organization says as of this month, more than 18,000 deaths have been recorded since the H1N1 virus was declared a pandemic in 2009. More than 214 countries and overseas territories and communities have reported cases of H1N1.

According to the WHO website, "the most active areas of pandemic influenza virus transmission currently are in parts of the Carribean and Central America, and to a lesser extent in West Africa and South and Southeast Asia."
