No cause for alarm over ?swine flu?: NIH Report

There is a high degree of concern among the people about whether ?swine flu? is in the country but data compiled by the country?s leading public health scientists shows there is little cause for alarm.

?Even though the activity of the H1N1 pdm virus has been higher during 2013-14 winter season in Pakistan and other countries than it was during the last three years or so, the disease burden is not as high as 2009, says a report analysing data collected by lead NIH scientists.

It is still regarded as a seasonal influenza virus by the World Health Organisation, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading world health bodies. This means that there is no cause for general alarm or panic said a spokesman for the country?s premier health institution.?

When contacted, NIH Executive Director Dr. Birjees Mazher Kazi confirming the report said in an exclusive chat with this scribe on Saturday that we need to understand influenza activity and burden for our sizeable population to be ready to deal with a potential pandemic virus.
