    NISHINOMIYA, Hyogo Prefecture--After teacher Haruhiko Furuta's wife died of cancer in May 2000, his physical and psychological condition was unstable for a few months, and he would occasionally burst out crying.

    Spreading cancer awareness in the classroom

    In an age when the average Japanese person has about a 50 percent chance of developing cancer in their lifetime, providing children with accurate information about the disease is gaining popularity in the classroom.

    Education is key to preventing cancer

    Why is it important to provide children with proper cancer education and teach them about the importance of life? A Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry panel to promote measures against cancer, of which I am a member, is currently tackling this issue.
