Swine flu cases in Japan top 5,000
'Pakistan Times' Wire Service
TOKYO:
The number of swine flu cases in Japan topped 5,000 on Friday, the health ministry said, as worries grew that the spread of the virus is speeding up.
The number of A (H1N1) infections, including people who were quarantined on arrival and US military personnel, reached 5,031, said a health ministry official who added that no deaths or serious cases had been reported.
The virus first hit Japan in early May and quickly spread through high schools in the western cities of Kobe and Osaka before infecting the wider population, with infections topping 1,000 on June 25.
The official toll on Friday morning was 4,986, plus 36 patients temporarily quarantined on arrival in Japan in recent months, and nine infections among US soldiers and their family members based in Japan.
"With students going into the summer break now, we hope that the spread will slow," said the health official, speaking as many Japanese schools started their holidays this week.
