Pneumonia tops list of infant deaths in Misamis

    Tuesday, May 4, 2010

SINCE 2004, pneumonia is listed as the first leading cause of infant deaths in Misamis Oriental province based on the 2009 records of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Dr. Ignacio Moreno, chief of the PHO, said there were at least 29 deaths due to pneumonia recorded in the province.

Pneumonia is an abnormal inflammatory condition of the lungs resulting from a variety of causes, including infection with bacteria, viruses and other chemical or physical injury to the lungs.

"Sometimes, this condition worsens because the signs and symptoms are taken for granted. They think this is just an ordinary illness, especially in children," Moreno said.

He added that among the typical symptoms of pneumonia include cough, chest pain, fever and difficulty in breathing. It is the leading cause of death among infants and children below five years old.

Moreno said pneumonia is a common illness but if taken for granted, may result to death among all age groups.

Aside from pneumonia, the other diseases included in the Top 10 causes of death among infants in the province are septicemia, neonatal asyphyxia, chronic heart failure, prematurity, diarrheal disease, accidents, congenital anomalies, sudden infant death and malnutrition. (ALR)
