    Third institute in Terengganu closes


    KUALA TERENGGANU: Institut Perguruan Sultan Mizan, Besut was closed yesterday after seven of its students showed Influenza A (H1N1) symptoms.


    This is the third higher learning institution in the state to be closed after Universiti Teknologi Mara and Politeknik Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, both in Dungun.

    The institute will be closed until Sunday.

    State Health, Unity and Consumers' Affairs Committee chairman Dr. A. A. Rahman Mokhtar said the results of the students' blood samples were not out yet, but it did not want a repeat of the situation in UiTM Dungun where the university was ordered to close only after more than 100 of its students contracted the flu.

    He said the students should wear face masks at all times, stay in their own rooms and keep a safe distance from family members.

    "Our aim is to reduce infection as three other schools -- Sekolah Kebangsaan Sultan Sulaiman Kuala Terengganu, Sekolah Menengah Sains Dungun and Perkaya Dormitories in Marang -- also had to be closed."

    In Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kedah, lectures were postponed and students were allowed to return home for a week until Aug 1 after a few students came down with flu-like symptoms.

    Bernama reports that three National Service camps have been ordered to close and trainees told to go home for a week from yesterday after several trainees showed flu-like symptoms.

    The camps are Tangkas Kediri in Kuala Kangsar, Perak (with 314 trainees), Lagenda Gunung Ledang, Asahan, Malacca (298 trainees) and Merang Suria, Setiu, Terengganu (292 trainees).

    National Service Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said in a statement that the trainees had to report to their pick-up points after a week to resume training unless they were given exemption by government medical officers.

    They had also been advised on the precautionary measures and to quickly seek medical treatment if the situation warranted, he added.
