Sharp rise in flu-like illness cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases in the country saw a sharp rise as 363 new cases were referred to hospitals from March 7-13, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican.

This was a 22.2% increase when compared with 297 cases recorded the previous week, but there were no deaths, he said.

"As of last week, the total number of ILI cases being treated at 38 government hospitals and eight private hospitals was 404 cases which also showed a 12.8% increase compared with the previous week," said Dr Mohd Ismail in a statement.

Dr Mohd Ismail said five ILI cluster cases were reported throughout last week - two in Ayer Keroh, Malacca involving six people, 12 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Limbang, Sarawak, three from Perkampungan Orang Asli, Kampung Permatang Keledang, Pekan, Pahang and three people from a family in Kampung Kota, Kota Baharu, Kelantan.

Four cluster cases were positive while the fifth from Kampung Kota was awaiting test reports from the lab, he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail added that from the Health Ministries observation, there was no sign of another wave of H1N1. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Immigration officers were among the five clusters or groups of people who were hospitalised last week after being tested positive for influenza A (H1N1).

They were attending an induction course at a hotel in Malacca when they showed symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI).

The other clusters who were found positive for the disease were:

    - two family members from Taman Muzaffar Shah, Air Keroh, Malacca,

    - 12 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Limbang, Limbang, Sarawak, and,

    - three people from an Orang Asli settlement in Kampung Permatang Keledang, Pekan, Pahang.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said they were awaiting laboratory results on three people from one family from Kampung Kota, Kota Baru, who were admitted with ILI to ascertain if they were also H1N1 victims.

"Last week, we saw an increase in people coming in with ILI symptoms to hospitals.

"We treated 363 new patients compared with 297 the previous week," he said.

A total of 404 patients are still warded in 38 hospitals, including eight private hospitals nationwide.

Dr ismail said 18 patients were treated for H1N1, with nine of them in the intensive care unit due to complications arising from co-morbid conditions.
