Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital is crowded with child patients with complaints of pneumonia and diarrhoea as the children are most vulnerable to two diseases during change of season.
At least 133 patients have been admitted to children's ward of the hospital against only 18 seats in the last three days. As the hospital cannot accommodate growing number of child patients, most of them are staying on veranda.
Besides, at least 150-200 patients are receiving treatment at the outdoor everyday. Hospital sources said about 193 patients, most with respiratory problem, received treatment at the outdoor yesterday.
During a visit to the hospital yesterday, this correspondent saw many child patients are lying on the floor of the children's ward and on hospital veranda.
Shahina of Fatapur village under Sadar upazila told this correspondent that she admitted her 11-month-old son to the hospital Friday morning with complaint of pneumonia. She is staying on the floor due to shortage of space in the children's ward.
Rozina, who admitted her 10-month-old twin babies to the hospital with complaints of pneumonia and diarrhoea on Sunday, is staying on a space beside the staircase. She came from Jummarhat village under Birganj upazila of Dinajpur district.
Dr Shahajahan Nawaj, a consultant of Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, said as there is no child specialist at the upazila level and in adjacent district Panchagarh, child patients are coming to this hospital.
He said only three nurses are engaged in the children's ward for 18 patients. So it is very difficult for them to serve the growing number of child patients.
Dr Shahajahan Nawaj said child patients with complaints of pneumonia and diarrhoea are on rise due to change of season. He hoped that the number of patients would start decreasing within three days. “If the patients come to hospital in time, they will get proper treatment and will recover soon.” he added.

Increasing deaths of child-patients in Barisal
      OUR CORRESPONDENT, BARISAL

Mar 13 : Number of children infected with different types of diseases connected with changes of season and rise of temperature is increasing everyday in Barisal.
At least 13 child-patients admitted at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital died in a month, including two of diarrhoea.
Negligence in treatment, shortage of medicines and equipment like oxygen cylinders were blamed by the guardians for increasing deaths of the child-patients.
SBMCH sources said there are only 34 beds, including 10 beds, at the diarrhoea ward for the child-patients. Most of the guardians of the patients alleged that their children died for the negligence of treatment dependable on internee doctors. Medicines needed for treatment of child-patients became scarce and acute shortage of equipment especially only six oxygen cylinders for huge number of child-patients also liable for the deaths of children, the guardians further said.
However Dr. Zahid Hossain, head of the child department and former principal of SBMC, and Dr. Asim Kumar Saha, child-specialist of SBMCH, partially denying the allegations said most of the deaths of the child-patients caused from pneumonia, breathing problem and brain stroke. Dr Fariduddin, director of SBMCH, said that warm weather helps the bacteria replicate faster, leading to increase in number of physically weak child and old aged patients.
"Normally, diarrhoea breaks out in the country at the end of April or early May. But this year we have found it earlier in early March due to increasing heat and scarcity of pure drinking water and fresh food.
Allotment of more oxygen cylinders and operation of central-oxygen supply channel would also be done soon," the doctors added.

Lone child hospital in Khulna struggles to cope with patients
          Staff Correspondent, Khulna

Mothers with their diarrhoea-affected children stay on the floor of Khulna Shishu Hospital as the lone child hospital in the division struggles to cope with around three times more patients than capacity. Photo: STAR

Khulna Shishu Hospital, the lone child hospital in Khulna division, is struggling to provide medical service for increasing number of diarrhoea patients as the disease has broken out in Khulna city and neighbouring upazilas.
The 218-bed hospital run by Khulna Shishu Foundation can hardly accommodate around 500 patients, including those kept on floors under special arrangement, said hospital officials.

But 1,264 diarrhoea patients were taking treatment at four wards and 30 cabins of the hospital on Wednesday, acting Administrative Officer Shila Halder said, adding that number of patients with other diseases like pneumonia, jaundice and intestinal disorders are also on the rise.

Diarrhoea situation, especially in slum areas of the city, is worsening due to hot weather and climate change while treatment at the hospital is being hampered due to shortage of doctors and life saving medicines including orsaline in addition to accommodation problem, said Dr Noor-e-Alam Siddiquii, medical officer of Khulna Shishu Hospital.

Guardians of children with usual diarrhoea are suggested not to bring them to the hospital as it can be cured with orsaline, and paracetamol tablets in case of fever, he said.

Several guardians alleged that children admitted to the hospital do not get proper medical services from doctors and nurses.

"I had to call in a doctor from outside when condition of my one-year-old daughter Pritha deteriorated as no doctor visited during 24 hours of her admission to Khulna Shishu Hospital on Tuesday," said Pranob Debnath of Rupsha upazila in Khulna district.

Contacted, Sheikh Abdul Kayyum, secretary general of Khulna Shishu Foundation, said, "Proper medical services cannot be provided to all the patients due to shortage of doctors and nurses. Still the hospital authorities are trying heart and soul to take proper care of patients."
