Hualien Creek exits the sea and sees a large number of bird carcasses sent for testing and found H5N1

    Wang Zhiwei

A large number of birds were found to have died abnormally at the Hualien Creek estuary, which was horrific. The county government sent the bird autopsy to the Animal Health Laboratory of the Agricultural Committee for inspection, and it was confirmed to be the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus strain, which was the first time a wild bird in Hualien was found. The Agriculture Department said that there is no doubt that H5N1 can infect people, and it has now gone to the sea for environmental disinfection. The public is asked not to touch the bird carcasses when they find them, and bird friends are also invited to inform each other to assist in monitoring.

The Hualien Creek estuary is listed as an important national wetland. Unexpectedly, on the 23rd of this month, a large number of bird carcasses were seen on the sand dune beach of the estuary. The number was about 20. The people successively notified the county government. Bird lovers who are aware of the difference and also worry about infectious diseases or artificial poisoning, please notify the relevant units of the Wild Bird Association...

The local government reported that dead chickens were discarded on the roadside in Yunlin County on Jan.14, 2023. The local government traced back to the source and confirmed it was from one backyard for their own use and no contact with poultry or poultry facilities. The local government implemented movement restriction to the animals of the backyard. Samples were sent to the National Reference Laboratory (Animal Health Research Institute, AHRI) for diagnosis on the same day. The H5N1 subtype of highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed by AHRI on Jan. 19. Meanwhile, 9 chickens and 9 ducks (backyard animals) were culled. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted after stamping out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within 5 km radius of the infected flocks are now under intensified surveillance. ...
