The association also urged the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Live Stock (MINFAL) to take up the matter on an emergency basis, especially with bird importers such as the Middle-East, Gulf and Far East, to convince them that the bird flu disease H5N1 does not exist in Pakistan. BABA said the importers should be requested to allow import of exotic birds from Pakistan.
Bird flu in Pakistan was a hoax . . .

Tell that to the Durrani family in the North West Frontier Province that H5N1 does not exist in Pakistan. At least two of the five brothers infected with H5N1 in late 2007 died from complications of H5N1 infections.

Bird traders complain of receiving cold shoulder from govt

    Karachi

The Birds and Animals Business Association (BABA) has complained that the government continues to neglect the matter of the preservation of their businesses, while a letter has also been written to President Asif Ali Zardari to appeal for help in this regard, The News has learnt.

BABA comprises breeders, local buyers and sellers, exporters and importers, carpenters engaged in making wooden crates, boxes, packers (skilled and unskilled labour), transporters, forwarding agents and (bird) feed sellers. Officials from the association alleged that the discouraging attitude of certain government officials and unnecessary propaganda has resulted in their businesses being ruined. ?We have been repeatedly requesting the ministries and departments concerned to consider our request through various letters and reminders, but we have been unable to get a response from their side,? said the letter written to the president, which bears the signatures of BABA President Abdul Raheem and General Secretary Syed Airaj Ahmed.

According to the letter, the export business of exotic birds was a source of foreign revenue till a few years ago, while thousands benefited from the employment opportunities generated in the sector. However, now they are being deprived of this prospect, given the needless conditions imposed to pursue this activity.

The letter said that aviculture is not different from agriculture and horticulture, but has been completely ignored. On the other hand, by virtue of government patronage, agriculture and horticulture have thrived.

The association suggested in their letter that the government should allow export of all Non-Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permissible species from the country without condition of No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the National Council of Conservation of Wildlife (NCCW) in order to ease the trade. However, mandatory checking may be carried out by the Provincial Wildlife Department in order to check illegal trade. Since most bird exporters and importers are in Karachi, the NCCW should set up its offices here to facilitate the businessmen, said BABA officials. Another suggestion by the association was the provision of a proper market for their business. They are, said BABA officials, always at the mercy of law enforcement agencies and the city administration. Hence, the government should allocate a proper space to the traders throughout the country.

Bird flu in Pakistan was a hoax: BABA

The Birds and Animals Business Association (BABA) alleged that at the end of 2003, certain vaccine-producing multinationals spread rumours about the outbreak of bird flu, Avian Influenza, in the poultry industry of many countries around the world. They spent millions of dollars on propaganda (mostly in third-world countries), trying to prove that the very strain of bird flu called H5N1 was transferable to human beings.

For almost five years of their propaganda campaign, they tried to link the death of almost 200 people (mostly related to the poultry industry) with bird flu, whereas the actual cause of their deaths could not be ascertained.

The association said that most countries affected by the propaganda have managed to free themselves of the ban but Pakistan is still giving ?due consideration? to this issue.

The association also added that when the matter was taken up with the Animal Husbandry Commissioner, MINFAL, a letter was finally issued ? dated December 30, 2004 ? to certain countries confirming that there was outbreak of H7 and H9 (low pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza) in Karachi, however no strain of H5N1 was found.
