Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan Medical Society (PMS) has urged the government to take precautionary measures against bird flu, which has affected neighbouring countries.

PMS President Dr Masood Akhtar Sheikh said international cooperation was required for controlling communicable diseases like bird flu. He said, “We can protect our neighbours and ourselves from the avian influenza through precautionary measures.” He said, “A comprehensive vaccination of birds makes them less vulnerable to the avian influenza. Poultry waste should be properly disposed of.”

He said the government should make it compulsory for poultry workers to use gloves, masks and gowns. Poultry workers should be given proper training for the safe handling of poultry products, he said. Health Department Additional Secretary Mushtaq Ahmed Sulehria said the department had started a campaign and also distributed medicine across the province.
