Outbreak of bird flu in October-November feared
    RECORDER REPORT
ISLAMABAD (September 28 2008): Outbreak of bird flu in the country is feared in the months of October and November, sources in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) told Business Recorder here on Saturday. The viral disease's outbreak across the world has shown that the virus is carried through poultry trade routes rather than migratory birds' flyways, but there might be wild migratory birds suffering from H5N1 virus commonly known as bird flu, they added.

For the first time cases of H5N1 were detected in Pakistan in March 2006 at two poultry farms in NWFP, stirring panic among consumers and a mass culling of birds in several areas, while in 2007, Pakistani officials sealed off several farms and culled around 10,000 chickens after an outbreak in the southern port city of Karachi.

Meanwhile, a senior official of Ministry of Food told Business Recorder that in order to improve milk production, the government has initiated a five years plan that was started in January 2007-08 and would be completed by 2011-12. Under the project, the official said, over 6000 farmers would be trained to improve the milk production capability of their animals through 'progeny tested bulls'. "The total cost of the project is Rs 1.5 billion and until now, we have trained almost 970 farmers in this regard", the official said.http://www.brecorder.com/index.php?i...&term=&supDate=
