    Banke bans poultry import

BANKE, Feb 15: Import of bird and poultry has been banned following the death of chickens at Phattepur VDC in Banke.

The District Livestock Office, Banke, said an unidentified disease seen at a poultry firm killed more than 500 chickens, prompting authorities to impose ban on bird and poultry import.

The temporary ban was necessary as we are trying to identify the disease, said Janak Ram Bhandari, veterinarian at the livestock office.

He said the dead chickens have been sent to Kathmandu for test, adding that they are adopting precautionary measure to control the disease from spreading.

Locals suspect the disease entered the VDC from Rupedia, a neighbouring Indian city.

KATHMANDU, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Bird flu, the Avian Influenza H5N1 virus, has been detected in four places of Banke district in mid-western Nepal.

According to Wednesday's nepalnews.com report, district livestock services office of Banke, some 365 km west of Kathmandu, confirmed the prevalence of bird flu in the district on Tuesday, after it received a report from the central laboratory in Kathmandu.

It had sent samples of poultry products to the laboratory after over 150 chickens and ducks died in a short span in Binauna, Kohalpur, Phattepur and Nepalgunj.

Authorities have started taking special measures to control the virus from spreading. They have declared Chacharpharka of Binauna- 4 as the "hotspot" and decided to kill and desterilise poultry and poultry products in and around the area.

An emergency meeting of chiefs of various offices in the district has decided to take the special measures in Chacharpharka and 500 meters around it.

Although, bird flu was found in Kohalpur, Phattepur and Nepalgunj municipality, authorities said that necessary action have already been taken in those places.

"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."
