SANKHUWASABHA: Typhoid and pneumonia patients have been growing in number ahead of Dashain in Sankhuwasabha district.
Their number, as recorded in Khandbari District Hospital, Chainpur Primary Health Centre and other sub-health posts in the district, has grown three-fold, the District Public Health Office (DPHO) said. The patients are being treated even on the floor due to the shortage of beds in hospitals.
The diseases are said to have been caused by unsafe drinking water and change of season, District Hospital chief Dr Chuman Lal Das said. As many as 120 patients visit the hospital in Khandbari on a daily basis against the usual 40. Thirty-four patients have been admitted to the 15-bedded hospital.
?We are treating the patients on stretchers, benches and in corners,? Dr Susan Bhattarai said. Dozens of pneumonia and typhoid patients visit the health facilities from Chainpur, Tamku, Wana, Dhupu, Barhabise, Matsepokharki, Sisiwa, Yaphu and Matengwa VDCs everyday, he said. Old patients have been discharged to make way for the new patients. Health workers are also in short supply. Fifty-two out of 152 seats of the health workers are vacant in the district, the DPHO said.
