KATHMANDU: The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations will soon carry out a diagnostic study on the recent bird flu outbreak in the country that led to the culling of over 1.5 million chickens, mostly in Kathmandu Valley and Kavre district, and pushed the poultry industry to the brink of a collapse.

The FAO recently sent a request letter in this regard to the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MoAD), seeking its permission to conduct the study.

?At the initiative of the government, FAO proposes to conduct a situation assessment of avian influenza in order to provide additional assistance in response to the current situation. Relevant components required include economic value chain analysis, epidemiological analysis, laboratory diagnostic results, disease response efforts (prevention and control) and communications,? says the letter sent by FAO.

The study, being funded by the USAID, will try to find out how the highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) spread through supply chains and markets and find out ways to mitigate its effect on producers, vendors and consumers in the future. This study will continue till December and a strategy on control of spread of the virus will be developed in January by referring to the findings of the study, according to MoAD.

The latest bird flu outbreak in the country began as early as January and reached a peak in August...
