The farm ministry, meanwhile, said that it confirmed seven new bird flu cases in the central and southwestern part of the country, the highest daily tally reported this winter and a clear sign that the airborne disease is spreading rapidly across the country.

It said three cases were in Naju, South Jeolla Province, 335km south of Seoul, with three others in neighboring counties. The single outbreak in Anseong is the second bird flu case in Gyeonggi Province, which is near the capital city.

It said all 204,400 ducks and chickens on the poultry farms have been ordered culled and buried to prevent further spread of the disease. Birds within three kilometers of the latest cases are also being destroyed.

Since the first confirmed case was reported on Dec. 31, South Korea has destroyed 3.24 million birds and raised its bird flu alert level to "orange" to reflect the rapid spread of the airborne animal disease. The government maintains a four-tiered alert system with "orange" being the third-highest level just below "red" but higher than "blue" and "yellow" alert postures.

The latest outbreaks bring the total number of avian influenza cases to 23.

Besides the latest outbreaks, the country was hit by the disease in the winter months of 2003-04 and 2006-07, with the most recent taking place in April 2008, resulting in a record 8.46 million birds being culled at a cost of around 264 billion won (US$237 million).

"State of Emergency Declared as Bird Flu Spreads to Gyeonggi Province"

A state of emergency has been declared on Tuesday here in Korea as avian influenza continues to spread.

According to the agriculture ministry, the flu is spreading rapidly throughout South Jeolla and Gyeonggi provinces.

As preventive measures, chicken and ducks within a three-kilometer radius of the affected farms will be put down, and the sale of these animals will be banned in traditional markets starting Thursday lasting until the 27th of January.

The ministry added that as migratory birds could also spread the virus, it plans to disinfect breeding sites.

    S.Korea ups bird flu alert

SEOUL, Jan 12 (Reuters) - South Korea, already battling a serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, has raised its bird flu alert level after detecting the H5N1 avian influenza virus at poultry farms in four provinces.

South Korea raised its bird flu alert a notch from 'caution' to 'watch', the agriculture ministry said in a statement late on Tuesday.

"The ministry decided to raise the alert as the disease is spreading more quickly," the statement said.

There have been 34 suspected cases of bird flu in poultry, with 16 cases confirmed, the ministry said.

Outbreaks of bird flu have prompted the authorities to cull 470,000 poultry, or 0.36 percent of the domestic stock, a ministry official said on Wednesday, while continuing the quarantine of commercial duck and chicken breeding farms in affected areas.

Six duck farms in Naju and Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, were found Tuesday to be affected by highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza.

With the spread of foot-and-mouth disease temporarily halted, quarantine authorities will devise additional measures such as vaccinations of hoofed and even-toed mammals nationwide if food-and-mouth disease spreads to the Jeolla provinces.

The Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said suspected cases of bird flu at three duck farms in Naju and three others in Yeongam were found to be those of the deadly strain of avian influenza.

Suspected cases were also reported in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province.

With 13 farms affected by bird flu in the province, the number of birds culled surpassed 800,000 Tuesday. A quarantine official said, ?We are making every effort to prevent the virus that has already affected South Jeolla Province from spreading to other regions.?

?How the disease will spread over the weekend and early next week is important,? he said. ?After watching the situation, we will consider additional measures such as a nationwide vaccination campaign.?

Bird flu spreads to northern S. Korea

SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed its first bird flu outbreak in the Gyeonggi region near Seoul on Monday, raising concerns that the highly contagious disease is spreading across the country despite quarantine efforts.

The farm ministry said a duck farm in Anseong, 77 kilometers south of Seoul, tested positive for the virulent strain of the H5N1 avian influenza after birds started dying off over the weekend.

The case is the first to be reported in the province surrounding the capital city in nearly three years. Avian influenza is an airborne disease that can be transmitted to humans, although there has never been a case of a South Korean getting sick.

Authorities said the Anseong outbreak is the ninth confirmed in the country this winter after the first bird flu cases were confirmed by quarantine authorities on Dec. 31.

The initial outbreaks were all centered in the Jeolla region in the southwestern part of the country and South Chungcheong in the central western region.

"All 32,000 ducks on the (Anseong) farm have already been ordered destroyed on Sunday as a precautionary measure, with 55,000 other birds within a 500-meter radius to be culled," an official said.

He said other birds within a 10-kilometer area of the poultry farm will be barred from being sold on the market or moved, while front-line inspectors will carefully monitor birds for sharp hikes in sudden deaths and drops in egg production.

The ministry, meanwhile, said the latest confirmation brings the number of birds culled at infected farms alone to over 194,600, with many more being destroyed to prevent the spread of the bird flu.
