A highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza (AI) is continuing to spread across the nation.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Saturday that samples from eleven chicken and duck farms in the provinces of Gyeonggi, South and North Chungcheong, North Jeolla and the Busan City area tested positive for the H5N6 strain of AI.

So far, birds at a total of 182 farms were confirmed to have been infected with the deadly virus.

Roughly 13-point-seven million birds at about 300 poultry farms have been culled, and more than four million additional birds will be culled, with the combined number reaching 18 million.

The accumulated number of culled poultry in the latest outbreak already surpassed the previous record set in the country's worst AI outbreak in 2014, when the nation culled 13-point-96 million birds during 195 days.
